The morning light streamed through the large front windows of the suburban house in Dallas, Texas.
Mark set his coffee mug down on the kitchen counter with a loud clatter.
He wiped his hands on his apron before grabbing his leather briefcase from the table.
His eight-year-old daughter Lily was standing near the end of the long hallway.
She was holding a small plastic plate filled with warm scrambled eggs, broccoli, and sausage.
Mark watched her carefully as she knelt down on the shiny wooden hallway floor.
Lily pushed the plate underneath the tiny gap of a closed white door.
The white door was located at the very end of the hallway next to the linen closet.
Mark felt a strange sensation in his chest as he stepped toward his daughter.
Mark: Hey! What are you doing? Who are you giving that food to?!
Lily jumped in surprise and pulled her hands back quickly.
Lily: Daddy, wait, please!
Her voice was shaking as tears began to form in her soft eyes.
Mark walked down the hallway with long, heavy strides.
His brow was furrowed in confusion and growing frustration.
Mark: Lily, answer me right now.
Lily: It is a secret, Daddy.
Mark: We do not keep secrets in this house.
Footsteps echoed down the grey-walled corridor behind them.
Sarah came running around the corner with her hair tied back in a messy knot.
Her face looked pale and her hands were trembling near her waist.
Sarah: What is going on out here?
Mark: She's been putting food under this door.
Sarah: Promise I wouldn't tell! What's happening?!
Mark: You knew about this, Sarah?
Sarah took a quick step backward and covered her mouth.
Sarah: Wait, I'm going to see what's in there!
Mark: Then tell me what's behind that door!
Mark reached down toward the brass doorhandle with a firm grip.
Lily grabbed his pant leg and yanked it with all her strength.
Lily: Please do not open it yet!
Mark looked down at his daughter with a sad and heavy expression.
He could hear a very faint noise coming from inside the dark room.
It sounded like tiny rustling paper and quiet breathing.
Mark pulled a small metallic flashlight from his jacket pocket.
He knelt down on the wooden floor right beside his daughter.
He pressed the power button and aimed the bright beam at the gap beneath the door.
The light illuminated small specks of dust floating in the narrow space.
Mark saw a pair of tiny pink socks resting on the hardwood floor inside.
His heart started pounding fast against his ribs like a heavy drum.
Mark: Who is in there?
Lily: She is my friend, Daddy.
Sarah: Mark, please just open the door gently.
Mark turned the brass knob until he heard a distinct click sound.
He pushed the white wooden door open into the dark room.
The flashlight beam cut through the heavy shadows inside the small room.
A young girl sat wrapped in a light blue blanket near the far wall.
She was holding a dusty framed family photograph tightly against her chest.
Young Girl: Hello, daddy?
Mark gasped loudly and dropped the heavy flashlight onto the rug.
The beam rolled across the room and lit up the child's small face.
Mark fell to his knees in total shock and disbelief.
Mark: Oh god, I'm so, so sorry!
He reached into the room and wrapped his arms tightly around the trembling child.
Sarah dropped to the floor beside them and began crying quietly.
Lily smiled softly as she watched her father hold the little girl.
The hallway was filled with heavy silence as the family embraced in the doorway.
