A Secret Saved In Shadows

A Father Finds a Hidden Room Behind His Hallway Wall

Mark sat on the edge of the hallway rug with his hands resting on his knees.

His mind was spinning as he looked at the little girl sitting on the bed.

Her name was Mia, and she looked remarkably like Lily.

Sarah brought a warm glass of water into the room and handed it to Mia.

Sarah: Drink this slowly, sweetheart.

Mia: Thank you, Sarah.

Mark rubbed his forehead while trying to make sense of everything around him.

Mark: How long has she been staying in this room?

Sarah: She came to our house three days ago, Mark.

Mark: Why didn't you tell me the moment she arrived?

Sarah looked down at the floor and pressed her lips together firmly.

Sarah: Because her adoption paper trail was completely tangled in court.

Mark: What does court paperwork have to do with hiding a child?

Sarah: Her biological uncle was trying to take her away to another state.

Lily stepped into the room and sat right beside Mia on the bed.

Lily: I kept her safe, Daddy.

Lily: I brought her breakfast every single morning before school.

Mark looked at his young daughter with deep pride and affection.

Mark: You are a very brave big sister, Lily.

Lily: I did not want them to take her away from us.

Mia held the framed family picture up so Mark could see it clearly.

It showed Mark, Sarah, and Lily standing together at a sunny park in Dallas.

Mia: Sarah said you would protect me if I stayed quiet.

Mark: I will always protect you, Mia.

Mark stood up and walked over to the small bedroom window.

He pulled back the thick white curtain to let the morning sunlight in.

The room brightened up instantly, revealing colorful drawings stacked on a small desk.

Mia had drawn pictures of four people standing outside a big yellow house.

Mark felt a lump form in his throat as he looked at the drawings.

Mark: We need to call our family lawyer right now.

Sarah: Are you sure that is safe?

Mark: Arthur has handled our legal affairs for ten years.

Mark: He will know exactly how to handle her emergency custody papers.

Sarah let out a deep sigh of relief and nodded her head.

Sarah: I was so scared you would be angry with me.

Mark: I was confused, but I am not angry at you for protecting a child.

Mia reached out her tiny hand and pulled on Mark's sleeve.

Mia: Am I allowed to come out into the living room now?

Mark: Yes, Mia, you never have to hide in here again.

Mark picked Mia up in his arms and lifted her off the bed.

Lily clapped her hands together with joy as they walked into the hallway.

The heavy weight that hung over the family seemed to lift away slowly.

They walked together toward the kitchen where warm sunlight filled the home.
