David walked down the long hallway of the family estate with a heavy heart.
The sun shone brightly through the tall arched windows of the grand corridor.
His young daughter Maya walked right beside him, holding onto his hand tightly.
She was only eight years old and still missed her late mother deeply.
David: Are you feeling alright today, sweetheart?
Maya: I miss mom, but I like wearing her silver pendant.
David: It looks beautiful on you, just like it did on her.
Maya smiled gently and touched the shiny pendant around her neck.
It was a special gift left behind by her grandmother before she passed away.
However, the peaceful moment in the hallway did not last very long.
Evelyn stepped out from the main parlor with a dark glare on her face.
She was David's ambitious stepmother who had managed the estate for five years.
Evelyn: Why is that child wearing expensive jewelry in my house?
David: This belonged to my late wife, Evelyn, as you well know.
Evelyn: Everything in this mansion belongs to the estate until the court decides.
David: That pendant was never part of the general estate property.
Evelyn crossed her arms and took a step closer toward the small girl.
Maya shrank back behind her father's leather jacket to hide from her glare.
Evelyn: I want all family valuables accounted for before the lawyers arrive tomorrow.
David: We are not hiding anything from anyone, so back off.
Evelyn: You always think you are above the family rules, David.
David: I only care about protecting my daughter from your constant greed.
Evelyn narrowed her eyes and pointed a finger at the young child.
Evelyn: That pendant was listed in your mother's private box last night.
David: My mother gave it directly to Maya three years ago.
Evelyn: Words mean nothing without official paperwork signed by a lawyer.
David took a deep breath and tried to stay calm for his child.
He knew Evelyn was looking for any excuse to push them out completely.
Ever since his father passed away, the mansion had become a war zone.
David: We will discuss this with the legal team tomorrow morning.
Evelyn: Make sure she does not touch anything else in this home.
Evelyn turned around and walked away toward the grand balcony office upstairs.
Maya looked up at her father with wide, scared eyes.
Maya: Is she going to take mom's necklace away from me, Daddy?
David: No, sweetheart, I will never let anyone take what is yours.
He knelt down and pulled his daughter into a warm, safe hug.
Yet deep down, David knew that Evelyn was planning something much worse.
