The Unraveling Lies

The parlor fell dead silent as Marcus walked over to the wall-mounted touchscreen terminal near the marble archway. He tapped in his four-digit security override code, pulling up the high-definition camera feeds from the estate hallway.

Marcus: I have the full high-definition recording from ten-fourteen AM today, Officer.

Officer Davis: Play the clip from thirty seconds before the glass shattered.

Julian: This is a violation of my personal privacy! You cannot air private estate footage to the police without a formal warrant!

Officer Davis: Sir, if a child is injured on the property, we have full legal authority to view relevant security footage. Quiet down.

On the crisp ten-inch screen, the video showed little Lily standing near the marble console holding her pink phone, smiling as she recorded a video message. Julian appeared from the study hallway, marching up to her with a tense, angry expression.

Victoria: Look at the screen, Evelyn. Look at your precious son.

The video clearly captured Julian grabbing Lily’s tiny wrist, twisting her arm to rip the pink phone out of her hand. When Lily pulled back and tried to keep her grip, Julian used his free hand to shove her backward with full force.

The camera caught the exact moment Lily’s back struck the crystal display cabinet, sending heavy glass panels crashing down over her as she collapsed onto the tile floor. Julian didn't even bend down to help her; he simply leaned over, snatched the phone off the floor, and slid it into his left jacket pocket.

Grandma Evelyn: Oh... oh dear God...

Victoria: Do you still think she tripped, Evelyn? Do you still think my daughter is a liar?!

Grandma Evelyn: Julian... how could you do that to a little girl?!

Julian: She was going to ruin everything, Mother! She recorded me taking the bearer bonds from Dad's safe!

Officer Davis: That's enough. Mr. Julian Sterling, put your hands behind your back right now.

Julian: Wait! You don't understand! The family estate was going broke! I needed those bonds to cover my trading margins before the market opened tomorrow!

Officer Davis: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.

The second officer stepped forward, pulling Julian’s arms behind his back and clicking the steel handcuffs tightly over his wrists. He reached into Julian’s dark grey suit jacket, pulling out the pink glitter phone and handing it directly to Officer Davis.

Officer Davis: One pink smartphone, secured as evidence of felony physical assault on a minor and robbery.

Julian: Victoria, please! Talk to them! Don't let them take me out the front doors in cuffs! The press is waiting at the main gate!

Victoria: I hope every single news camera in California gets a picture of your face in the back of that police cruiser, Julian.

Julian: Mother! Do something! Tell them you won't press charges!

Grandma Evelyn: I... I can't protect you from this, Julian... You threw a child into glass...

Julian: You hypocrite! You told me to secure the trust fund at all costs!

Officer Davis: Let's go, sir. Walk toward the vehicle.

Julian was dragged down the long marble hallway, past the broken crystal display cabinet and the blood-stained floor, shouting insults at his family until the front double doors slammed shut behind him.

Paramedic: Ma'am, we've cleaned and bandaged your daughter's legs. The cuts are deep, but thankfully there are no severed tendons. She will need about fifteen stitches at the emergency room to close the wounds properly.

Victoria: Thank you so much. Is she safe to be moved now?

Paramedic: Yes, we have a stretcher ready to carry her out safely so she doesn't have to walk on those bandages.

Lily: Mommy... is Uncle Julian gone?

Victoria: He’s gone, baby. He’s never going to hurt you or come near this house ever again.

Victoria leaned down, kissing Lily’s forehead gently as the paramedics carefully moved her onto the padded transport board.
