The bright California sun poured through the high arching windows of the Los Angeles mansion, lighting up the white marble floors and the grand floral arrangements set out for the family celebration. Laughter echoed from the courtyard, but inside the main hallway, the sound of shattered glass cut through the music like a gunshot.
Julian: Get out of the way! You just ruined everything!
Seven-year-old Lily hit the display cabinet hard, her small body shattering the thick glass doors before she tumbled onto the cold marble floor among hundreds of sharp, glistening shards. Blood instantly began to seep through the lace hem of her purple dress.
Julian: Look at what you did! She destroyed the entire display!
Lily: HE PUSHED ME, MOMMY! HE PUSHED ME!
Lily sat trapped in the middle of the broken glass, tears streaming down her pale, freckled cheeks as her tiny hands trembled over her cut knees. Julian stood towering over her, his dark grey suit immaculate, adjusting his cuffs with an arrogant, disdainful look on his face while the surrounding relatives gathered at the end of the hall, whispering among themselves.
Grandma Evelyn: Stop ruining the party! Julian, get that noisy child out of the hallway before the investors walk inside!
Julian: You heard your grandmother, Lily! Get up right now and stop crying like a dramatic little brat!
Lily: I didn't touch the glass... he shoved me because I wouldn't give him my phone!
Grandma Evelyn: Don't you lie about your uncle! Julian would never do such a thing! You were running around where you didn't belong!
Footsteps clicked rapidly against the marble as the grand double doors swung open. Victoria, dressed in a dark maroon dress, took one look at her daughter bleeding on the floor and her brother standing over her with a smirk.
Victoria: GET AWAY FROM MY DAUGHTER!
Victoria didn't slow down. She charged down the long hallway, her eyes locked on Julian. Before he could even turn his head, she launched herself forward, her heel striking him squarely in the chest with brutal, unstoppable force.
Julian flew backward, slamming heavily onto the marble floor with a loud gasp as the air was knocked completely out of his lungs. Victoria landed on her feet and immediately dropped down, pinning him to the floor with her knees as her face twisted in pure, terrifying rage.
Victoria: YOU JUST MADE THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF YOUR LIFE!
