Never Let Anyone Make You Feel Small

The three of them walked slowly down the bright marble sidewalk toward the parking lot behind the bakery[cite: 1]. The afternoon breeze blew gently through the trees lining the suburban street, fluttering the massive American flag high above the storefronts[cite: 1].

Sarah: "So, Marcus... do your club members really build wheelchair ramps for families?"

Marcus: "We do. Materials are bought through our charity drive, and my guys handle all the carpentry labor for free. If you ever need modifications done at your home, you just give us a call."

Sarah: "Actually, our front porch has four steep steps. It's been really hard carrying Lily up and down every single day."

Marcus: "Consider it done. I'll bring four of my best guys over this Saturday morning. We'll have a custom wooden ramp built by noon."

Sarah: "I... I don't know what to say. We've been trying to save up for a ramp contractor for over six months. The estimates were thousands of dollars."

Marcus: "Save your money for her therapy. Guardians take care of their own."

They reached Sarah's sedan parked in the shade of a large oak tree. Sarah opened the back door and helped Lily settle onto the cushioned seat, carefully tucking her aluminum crutches into the trunk.

Lily: "Mr. Marcus?"

Marcus: "Yeah, kiddo?"

Marcus knelt down once more by the open car door, bringing his large frame down to eye level with the young girl[cite: 1].

Marcus: "Never let anyone make you feel small."

Lily: "Thank you..."

Lily leaned forward and wrapped her small arms around the big man’s neck in a tight hug[cite: 1]. Marcus smiled, gently patting her back before pulling away[cite: 1].

Sarah: "Here's my phone number, Marcus. Please call me so I can send you the address for Saturday."

Marcus: "I'll text you tonight, Sarah. You take care of this little champion."

Sarah: "We will. Thank you again, for everything."

Marcus stood up to his full height, waving as Sarah backed the car out of the parking space. Through the tinted rear window, Lily held Barnaby up to the glass, waving the rabbit's plush paw back at him.

Marcus watched until the car turned the corner and disappeared down the sunlit street. He adjusted his leather vest, turned around, and walked back toward his motorcycle parked under the fluttering American flag[cite: 1], a satisfied grin breaking through his thick beard.
