The Truth Behind The Armor

Sarah: "I'm Sarah. Thank you... really. You have no idea how much this means to me."

Marcus: "Name's Marcus. And you don't need to thank me, Sarah."

Lily: "Mom, Mr. Marcus made the big boy say sorry! He shouted so loud the whole street heard!"

Sarah: "He did, did he?"

Sarah smiled warmly, wiping a speck of dirt off Lily’s nose before standing up to shake Marcus's large hand.

Sarah: "You look like you ride with one of those motorcycle clubs."

Marcus: "I do. President of the Iron Guardians, local chapter right down on Fifth Street."

Sarah: "Iron Guardians? I've heard that name before. Aren't you the group that does the charity runs for the children's hospital?"

Marcus: "That's us. We raise money for pediatric medical equipment, wheelchair access ramps, rehab trusts, and family support funds. Kids like Lily... they're the reason my guys ride every weekend."

Lily looked up at Marcus, her eyes wide with wonder as she pointed at the embroidered patch on his vest.

Lily: "Is that why you have a shield on your jacket?"

Marcus: "That's right, little lady. That shield means it's our job to protect people who need a little extra help."

Sarah: "Lily was born with cerebral palsy. She's been through three surgeries in the last two years just to be able to walk with those crutches. We've spent months in physical therapy."

Marcus: "Then she's tougher than any guy in my club. Most grown men couldn't handle half of what she's gone through."

Lily: "My therapist says I'm going to walk without crutches by next summer!"

Marcus: "I don't doubt it for a second. You've got the heart of a fighter."

Marcus unclipped a small, metallic silver pin from the lapel of his leather vest. It was shaped like a small motorcycle wheel inside a protective shield.

Marcus: "Here. I want you to have this."

Lily: "Really? For me?"

Marcus: "You earned it today. Pin it right there on your overalls."

Lily’s face lit up with a brilliant smile as Marcus carefully fastened the silver emblem onto the denim fabric of her overalls.

Sarah: "Marcus, this is so sweet of you, but we can't take your official pin..."

Marcus: "She's an honorary Guardian now, ma'am. Official club business."

Lily: "Look, Mom! I'm a Guardian!"

Sarah: "You certainly are, sweetie."

Marcus: "Now, how about I walk you two back to your car, just to make sure no more foolish teenagers cross your path?"
