Dr. Vance: Mrs. Sterling, are you and your son okay?
Eleanor: We are going to be fine, Doctor. Thank you so much... and I am so sorry for the mess my father caused in your hospital.
Dr. Vance: You don't need to apologize for anything. If it wasn't for your son's quick thinking and brave actions, your father might have gotten away with his entire scheme.
Doctor Vance walked over to Leo, crouching down to look the young boy in the eyes with a warm, approving smile.
Dr. Vance: You have a sharp eye, kid. How did you figure out the cast was fake?
Leo: Last night, when he thought I was asleep, he dropped his tv remote under the bed. He bent down and picked it up with his bad leg fully bent! A real broken leg can't bend like that!
Dr. Miller: Impressive observation, young man. You saved your mother's entire life savings today.
Eleanor: How did you get that rock inside the hospital, Leo?
Leo: I hid it in my backpack from the garden outside... I knew if I broke the cast, everyone would see the truth.
Eleanor kissed her son on the forehead, squeezing his hands tightly as she looked up at the doctors.
Eleanor: What will happen to the clinic downtown that forged those medical reports?
Dr. Vance: The police are already executing a search warrant on their facility as we speak. Everyone involved in this fraud ring will be stripped of their medical licenses and face federal conspiracy charges.
Eleanor: Good. Nobody should ever use a hospital to hurt their own family like that.
An hour later, Eleanor and Leo walked out through the front glass doors of Saint Jude Memorial Hospital into the bright, warm afternoon sunshine. The air was fresh and clean, free from the heavy scent of antiseptic and deceit.
Leo: Mom, can we go home now?
Eleanor: Yes, sweetie. We're going home. And tomorrow, we're going to start organizing the new youth community center your father always wanted to build.
Leo: With the trust fund money?
Eleanor: With every single penny. We're going to use it to help people who actually need it.
Leo smiled, taking his mother's hand as they walked down the stone steps toward their car. The dark shadows of deception were finally cleared away, replaced by the unbreakable bond between a mother and her son who stood up for the truth.
