David froze in place, his face turning pale as Sarah's harsh words echoed through the massive high-ceilinged room. He turned his eyes sharply toward Victoria, who was now scrambling to get back on her feet, her expensive hair now messy and her sky-blue dress stained from the floor. Her face flushed with bright red embarrassment and panic as she realized her wealthy, powerful fiance had just walked in on the situation.
Victoria: David! Darling, do not listen to this crazy servant! She attacked me for no reason!
Waitress Sarah: I did not attack you without reason! You were pulling this innocent baby by his blanket across the stone floor while he was screaming his lungs out!
Victoria: She is lying, David! She is just trying to create drama to steal money from us or get a big tip! Why would I ever do something like that to your baby? I love this child!
David looked back and forth between the two women. Sarah stood completely calm and steady, her eyes clear and honest, holding the baby with deep motherly care. Meanwhile, Victoria was breathing heavily, her eyes darting nervously around the room, her voice pitch shrill and overly defensive. David was a sharp businessman who spent his career reading people in high-stakes negotiations, and he could instantly tell when someone was hiding a terrible truth.
He slowly walked down the marble steps toward the central hall, his heavy dress shoes making loud, firm thuds against the floor. He stepped directly past Victoria without offering her a hand to help her up. Instead, he walked straight up to Sarah and carefully looked down at his newborn son. The baby boy was snuggled tightly against Sarah's apron, his small face still wet with tears, his little eyelids swollen from prolonged crying. On the edge of the baby's blanket, David noticed dark grey dust marks and fabric wear consistent with being dragged forcefully across stone.
The realization hit David like a physical blow to the chest. His blood ran cold, quickly replaced by a wave of explosive, uncontrollable fury. For months, Victoria had pretended to be a loving, caring future stepmother to his motherless child. His late wife had passed away shortly after giving birth, leaving David as a single father desperate to provide a safe home for his son. He had trusted Victoria, believing she genuinely cared for the boy, but now the mask had fallen completely off in broad daylight right underneath the American flag that stood for honor and protection.
David: Victoria... is she telling the truth? Did you put my son on the floor and drag him?
Victoria: David, he was crying and would not stop! I was just trying to move him to his room! I did not mean to hurt him, I swear!
Her partial confession was all David needed to hear. The fact that she admitted to dragging a helpless newborn child because she was annoyed by his crying shattered any remaining respect or affection he had for her. His hands curled into tight fists at his sides, his body trembling with pure rage as he faced the woman he had almost married.
