The grand foyer of the Sterling estate was quiet in the bright morning sunlight. High ceilings and polished white marble floors reflected the warm daylight streaming through the huge arched windows. An American flag hung proudly on the tall wall, draped neatly over the grand staircase. Everything in the home looked pristine and perfect, just as Andrew Sterling demanded. But behind the beautiful walls, deep pain had lingered for two long years.
Clara adjusted her white apron dress as she wiped down the wooden banister. She was a fair-skinned woman with soft eyes that carried a heavy burden of sadness. She moved quietly through the mansion, careful not to make a sound. Clara had been hired only three days ago through an agency, and she worked hard to keep her head down. Yet, every time she walked past the family portraits in the hallway, her breath hitched in her throat.
Suddenly, the sound of loud crying echoed down the marble hallway. Clara dropped her polishing cloth onto the tray and turned around. Two small four-year-old twin boys, Leo and Sam, came running down the hall. Their tiny faces were red, and tears streamed down their cheeks. They wore matching little blue suits, but their ties were loose, and their hair was messy from weeping.
Clara knelt down on the hard floor right away, opening her arms without thinking. The two boys ran straight into her lap, burying their small faces into her shoulder. Their tiny hands gripped her white apron tightly as sobs wracked their small bodies. Clara wrapped her arms around them, holding them close against her heart.
Clara: Oh, sweethearts, what is wrong? Why are you crying so hard?
Leo: We do not want to go to the party! We want our mommy!
Sam: The new lady was mean to us! She yelled at us!
Clara felt a sharp stab in her chest. She rubbed their backs gently, humming a low, soothing melody. It was an old lullaby about little birds returning home at sunset. As soon as the notes left her lips, the two boys quieted down slightly. They pulled back just enough to look into her face with wide, teardrop-filled eyes.
Leo: You know the bird song, Clara! Mommy used to sing that to us every night!
Clara: It is a special song, little one. It keeps you safe when you feel scared.
Sam: You hold us just like Mommy did! You are our Mommy!
Clara wiped a tear from her own eye, her voice trembling as she kissed Sam's forehead. The bond she felt with these two boys was stronger than anything she had ever known. But before she could say another word, the heavy wooden front doors slammed open with a loud bang that echoed off the white walls.
Heavy, rapid footsteps echoed down the grand hall. Andrew Sterling stepped into the foyer wearing a sleek black velvet tuxedo suit. His jaw was set tight, and his eyes burned with intense anger. Beside him walked Victoria, a tall woman in a bright blue satin dress that rustled loudly as she stepped. Victoria held tightly onto Andrew's arm, her red lips turned down in a heavy scowl.
Andrew: What is going on in here? Why are my sons calling you Mommy?!
His voice thundered across the bright room, making the small boys flinch against Clara's knees. Clara froze, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked up slowly at the wealthy man standing before her, the man whose face haunted her dreams every single night.
