Six months later, David stood inside the grand county courtroom for the final sentencing hearing of the case.
Arthur Vance sat at the defense table wearing an orange jumpsuit, looking completely stripped of his former status.
Elena sat beside her public defender, waiting nervously as the judge reviewed the final victim impact statements.
The courtroom was packed with local news reporters interested in the high-profile legal scandal that rocked the town.
The judge cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses before delivering his final verdict from the raised bench.
Judge: The deliberate exploitation of a family's personal trust for financial gain is an egregious violation of law.
Arthur Vance: Your Honor, I ask for leniency based on my thirty years of practice without prior conviction.
Judge: You used your position as an officer of the court to commit systematic fraud against your clients.
The judge sentenced Arthur Vance to twelve years in state prison without the possibility of early parole.
Elena received a five-year sentence for her active role in stealing documents and threatening a minor child.
David let out a long breath of relief as the bailiffs led the convicted defendants away through the side door.
He walked out of the heavy brass doors of the courthouse into the bright morning sunshine outside.
Sarah met him near the front steps, holding a folder containing the final sealed court protection orders.
Sarah: It is officially over, David. Every single asset has been secured under new legal guardianships.
David: Thank you for everything you did to protect my daughter's future through this long trial.
Sarah: Maya's quick thinking is what made this complete victory possible for all of us today.
David drove back home, feeling a profound sense of closure as he pulled into his quiet residential driveway.
Maya ran out of the front door to greet him, wearing a bright smile as she gave him a tight hug.
The dark chapter of betrayal was officially closed, replaced by a future filled with safety, honesty, and family love.
