Emily's fingers slipped inside the side zipper of her white purse, carefully feeling around until she gripped the cold metal frame of her black smartphone. With a smooth and deliberate motion, she pulled the phone out and immediately unlocked the screen with her thumb print. She had set up a special speed dial contact weeks ago for emergency situations just like this one. Chloe saw the bright screen glow and immediately lunged forward across the bed frame to snatch the device away from Emily's hands.
Chloe: Give me that phone right now! You are not calling anyone!
Emily: Get your hands off me!
Before Chloe could grab the phone, the wooden door swung open again and Doctor Marcus Vance hurried into the room. Doctor Vance was a senior obstetrician who had taken care of Emily's family for over fifteen years. He wore a crisp white lab coat over his blue scrubs, and his eyes widened in absolute shock as he witnessed Chloe aggressively reaching over the fragile pregnant patient lying in the bed. He pulled his stethoscope from his neck and rushed forward across the marble floor with rapid, heavy footsteps.
Doctor Vance: Emily, put the phone down!
Doctor Vance: What is going on in here? Ma'am, back away from this patient immediately!
Chloe: Stay out of this doctor! This is a private family matter regarding a legal trust fund!
Doctor Vance: I do not care about your legal money disputes! This is my hospital ward!
Despite the panicked shouting from the doctor, Emily did not hesitate for even a fraction of a second. She pressed the green call button on her screen and lifted the smartphone directly up to her right ear. The line rang twice before a deep, calm, authoritative voice answered from the other end. It was Raymond Sterling, her father's older brother and the chief executive officer of one of the largest corporate law firms in the state. Raymond was also the primary trustee appointed in her father's official last will and testament.
Emily: Uncle Raymond... I need you to come up to the third floor.
Raymond: Emily? What is wrong? Are you having the baby?
Emily: Chloe is here in room three hundred four. She just kicked my bed and tried to force me to sign away my custody rights and inheritance papers.
Raymond: Stay where you are. I am in the parking lot right now with two armed security officers and our senior family lawyer. I will be up in thirty seconds.
The phone call ended, and the line went completely silent. Chloe heard Raymond's loud voice clear through the phone receiver, and her face instantly turned completely pale. The arrogant smile she had carried into the room vanished, replaced by a sudden look of pure panic. She knew very well who Raymond Sterling was; he held complete financial authority over the entire family estate until Emily's baby reached twenty-one years of age. If Raymond found out that Chloe had physically threatened Emily while she was admitted for medical treatment, he would file an immediate restraining order and revoke her monthly living allowance from the estate account without hesitation.
