The tension in the grand hallway was thick enough to choke on as Victoria stood glaring down at the trembling young mother. But before Victoria could open her mouth to launch into another sharp lecture about household rules, a tall shadow fell across the hardwood floor. Julian Vance stepped directly between his wife and the crying maid, his large frame completely blocking Victoria from moving any closer to Clara. His face was completely calm, but his jaw was set into a hard, rigid line that his wife had rarely seen during their five years of marriage. He didn't yell or raise his voice at all, which somehow made his sudden presence even more intimidating to everyone in the room.
Julian: That is quite enough, Victoria. Step back into the living room right now.
Victoria: Julian? What are you doing? She was making a scene in our front hall!
Julian did not even turn his head to look at his wife as he reached deep into the inner pocket of his dark suit jacket. He pulled out a sleek black leather wallet, thumbed past a stack of hundred-dollar bills, and slipped out a shiny black credit card with no spending limit. Clara looked up slowly through her blurred, tear-filled vision, her left cheek still burning with red hot pain from the strike she had just taken. She expected her wealthy employer to hand her a formal notice of termination or tell her to pack her belongings immediately. Instead, Julian leaned down slightly, holding out the heavy metal card right in front of her trembling face.
Julian: Consider it paid. Take care of your child right now.
Clara: Sir? I... I cannot take this from you. I don't have a way to pay you back anytime soon.
Julian: You aren't paying me back. Drive to the pharmacy, clear the bill, and get the medicine your daughter needs. Go.
Victoria gasped loudly in absolute shock, stepping around her husband's shoulder with her hands clasped against her chest in total disbelief. She couldn't understand why her powerful, business-minded husband was offering thousands of dollars to a simple household maid who had just created a noisy disruption in their private home. She opened her mouth to protest, her voice rising into a sharp, shrill register that echoed off the high ceilings.
Victoria: Are you insane, Julian? You are handing an unlimited card to the cleaning staff! She is lying to get money!
Julian: Look at the girl's head, Victoria. Look at the bandage. She is not lying about anything.
Clara reached out her right hand with incredible caution, her fingers shaking so hard that she almost dropped the heavy black card as Julian placed it gently into her palm. She squeezed the cool plastic tightly in her fist, feeling a wave of overwhelming relief wash over her body so fast that her knees almost gave out beneath her. She didn't waste another second arguing or explaining herself to Victoria. Clutching Lily safely against her neck, Clara turned on her heel and rushed down the long oak hallway toward the side exit door, her heart pounding with a mix of fear, pain, and profound gratitude as she fled into the bright morning sunshine.
