The Cry For Help

The polished oak floors of the Vance family mansion stretched on forever, reflecting the bright lights hanging from the high ceiling. Clara stood near the front entryway, her small hands shaking violently as she pressed the phone to her ear. Her young daughter, Lily, was wrapped tightly in a faded yellow blanket, resting her heavy head against Clara's chest. A white bandage sat taped across the little girl's forehead, covering the small tube that had been inserted earlier that morning. Lily was crying softly, her tiny body trembling with every breath she took in the warm air of the foyer. Clara stroked her child's dark hair, trying her absolute best to keep her own voice steady, but the panic in her chest was completely overwhelming.

Clara: Please, you have to help me! She needs the medicine right now! I just need twenty-eight hundred dollars!

The voice on the other end of the line was completely flat and cold, belonging to the head pharmacy clerk at the children's hospital downtown. They had the specialized treatment sitting on the counter, but hospital policy was strict and completely unyielding. Without full payment or an approved insurance guarantee, the specialty pharmacy was not legally allowed to release the life-saving compound to anyone. Clara felt hot tears flowing freely down her cheeks, burning her skin as they mixed with the light spray of dusting polish on her maroon uniform. She had worked for the Vance family for over three years, never missing a single day of hard work or complaining about the long hours.

Clara: Please, she will miss her morning dose! If she skips this window, the doctors said her fever will spike again!

The pharmacy clerk simply repeated the same cold line about store rules and mandatory fees before hanging up the phone entirely. Clara held the dead cell phone against her ear for a long moment, listening to the empty dial tone while her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Lily let out a high-pitched whimper, burying her face into Clara's neck as her fever continued to rise rapidly. Clara looked down at her daughter's pale face and felt completely helpless, holding the little girl tighter against her body. She had spent her entire savings account on the emergency room visit the previous night, leaving her with absolutely nothing left in her bank account.

Clara: Mama is so sorry, baby. They won't release it without the payment.

Standing just around the corner near the heavy wooden oak doors of the home office, Julian Vance watched the entire painful exchange in absolute silence. He was a tall man in his late thirties, wearing a perfectly tailored dark business suit that reflected his position as the chief executive officer of the region's largest real estate development firm. He had stepped out into the hallway to check on a package delivery when he heard the frantic sobbing echoing down the long gallery. Julian did not usually get involved in the daily household matters, leaving all staff management strictly to his high-society wife, Victoria. But seeing the small toddler shivering under the bright recessed lights made him stop dead in his tracks.

Julian: Twenty-eight hundred dollars.

He repeated the specific number under his breath, his calm dark eyes taking in every detail of the desperate scene playing out before him. Clara did not hear him speaking from the shadows of the doorway, her focus entirely consumed by the burning heat radiating off her small child. She began to pace frantically back and forth across the hallway, her nonslip work shoes squeaking softly against the immaculate hardwood floor. The sound echoed through the massive home, breaking the usual quiet atmosphere that the owners demanded at all times during the morning hours. Julian took a single slow step forward, his expensive leather dress shoes making no sound at all on the floor runner as he prepared to speak to her directly.
