Walking Out into the Rain

The Unspoken Terms Handed Down Before Her Grand Estate Wedding

Elena pushed open the heavy brass doors of the club, stepping out into the cool evening drizzle.

Julian: Elena, wait! What about your father’s garage loan? You can’t afford to pay off that commercial debt on your own!

Elena stopped at the top of the wide granite steps and looked back over her shoulder with a calm smile.

Elena: That is the most pathetic part of your entire scheme, Julian.

Victoria: What could possibly be amusing about your family’s financial ruin?

Elena: My father’s loan and mortgage were paid in full six months ago by a private family trust.

Victoria’s mouth fell open, her umbrella slipping from her fingers and clattering down the wet stone.

Victoria: That’s impossible! We bought that debt directly from the regional lender!

Elena: You bought a secondary dummy lien drafted by Marcus Vance to see just how far you would go to blackmail me.

Julian: Why would Dad pay off her father’s debt? They never even met!

Elena: They did meet, Julian. Ten years ago on Highway 9, when your father's car slid off an icy bridge during a blizzard.

Julian stood frozen on the steps, staring at Elena in total shock.

Julian: Highway 9? The crash that nearly killed Dad?

Elena: My father was the volunteer paramedic who crawled into that crushed vehicle, stopped your dad’s internal bleeding, and stayed beside him for four hours in the snow until help arrived.

Victoria gasped, her hand clutching the stone balustrade for support.

Victoria: That volunteer medic was named David Vance?

Elena: His name is David Vance. Marcus Vance's younger brother. The brother your family looked down on because he chose public service over corporate wealth.

Julian: Dad knew who you were from the very beginning?

Elena: Arthur knew the moment he saw my name on your college graduation announcement. He told me before he passed away that my father saved his life, and he would never allow his family to destroy mine.

A modest dark sedan pulled up to the circular driveway, its headlights cutting through the evening mist.

The driver’s door opened, and David Vance stepped out into the rain, holding a large umbrella.

David: Good evening, Victoria. Good evening, Julian.

Victoria stood motionless, her eyes locked on the gold paramedic service pin resting on David's coat lapel.

David: Ready to head home, Elena?

Elena: I’m more than ready, Dad.

Julian: Mr. Vance, please... tell her to come back inside. We can fix all of this right now!

David looked at Julian with quiet pity, shaking his head slowly.

David: Some things cannot be fixed with a checkbook, son. Arthur tried to teach you that your whole life.

David opened the car door for Elena, holding the umbrella over her as she climbed into the passenger seat.

Elena pulled the door shut, looking out through the rain-streaked glass as Julian dropped to his knees on the wet country club stairs while his mother stared into the darkness.

The sedan accelerated smoothly down the driveway, leaving the Sterling estate and all its hollow millions behind forever.
