Elena pulled a thick, unsealed manila envelope from her bag and laid it squarely over the leather prenup binder.
Julian: Elena, what is that? What kind of game are you trying to play?
Elena: It’s not a game, Julian. It’s an independent audit of your family’s private charitable accounts.
Victoria let out a short, dismissive laugh, waving her hand toward the papers.
Victoria: You’re bluffing. You have no legal access to Arthur’s financial filings or estate books.
Elena: Open it, Victoria. Take a close look at the bank authorization stamps on page four.
Julian reached forward with nervous hands, pulling out the first sheaf of bank statements and sworn disclosures.
Julian: Mother... what is this transaction routing through the Cayman Islands?
Victoria: Put those papers down immediately, Julian! Don't touch them!
Julian: It says eighteen million dollars was wired out of the family children’s foundation into an unlisted overseas account last December!
Victoria: That was a confidential private transfer! It was entirely legal!
Elena: The federal tax authorities didn't consider it legal when their audit division flagged the shell company last month.
Victoria grabbed the papers from Julian’s fingers, her eyes widening as she spotted the official government seal on the header.
Victoria: Where did you get internal records from the Treasury Department?
Elena: You forgot that before I started teaching math, I spent seven years as a forensic auditor for the state tax commission.
Julian: You told me you just handled basic accounts in an administrative office!
Elena: I didn't think I would ever have to audit my future husband’s family, Julian.
Victoria: Arthur would never have let an outsider near his personal safes! This is criminal theft!
Elena: Arthur didn't just let me near them, Victoria. He gave me the keys and the combination two weeks before he passed away in hospice.
Julian stumbled back from the table, his face draining of all color.
Julian: Dad gave you access to his private files? He was heavily medicated during his last month!
Elena: He was completely clear-headed every evening, Julian. While you and your mother were out in the hospital hallway arguing over who would inherit his voting shares.
Julian’s jaw worked silently, unable to find words to defend himself.
Elena: Arthur called me into his room because he couldn't stomach the way you two were already dividing his empire before his heart stopped.
Victoria: Arthur loved this family! He would never betray our legacy to a stranger!
Elena: He didn't betray the legacy, Victoria. You did, when you misappropriated eighteen million dollars from his foundation to pay off your margin debts in London.
Victoria’s breath caught in her chest, her diamond bracelets rattling against the mahogany wood.
Victoria: You cannot prove anything. No prosecutor is going to take the word of a common schoolteacher over the Sterling family name!
Elena: I don’t have to convince a prosecutor, Victoria. Because the prosecutor didn't write the conditional codicil in Arthur’s final will.
Julian: What codicil? Dad’s will cleared probate court eight months ago!
Elena: You cleared the public probate documents. You never looked for the sealed testamentary trust Arthur deposited with the appellate court.
Victoria stood up abruptly, knocking her silver water goblet onto the linen cloth.
Victoria: Arthur never filed a secret codicil without my knowledge!
Elena: Turn to page eight, Julian. Read clause fourteen aloud so your mother can hear every single word.
