Six months later, the high wooden doors of the county supreme court building swung open to a packed gallery of reporters and spectators.
Eleanor sat at the defense table dressed in a plain orange prison jumpsuit, her hair tied back in a low ponytail, her wrists bound by heavy transit chains.
Her defense attorney leaned over, whispering frantically into her ear as the prosecutor adjusted his microphone across the room.
Defense Attorney: Eleanor, the district attorney refuses to lower the charge to simple negligence. The video evidence is too clear.
Eleanor: You told me my father could influence the state prosecutor!
Defense Attorney: Your father told us directly that if you don't take the plea offer today, he will publicly testify against your character.
Eleanor: He wouldn't dare!
Defense Attorney: He already gave a written statement detailing your financial debts before you married Sterling. You have no move left here.
The judge entered the courtroom, taking her seat at the high bench as the entire room stood up in respectful silence.
Judge Vance: We are here today for the final sentencing in the case of the State versus Eleanor Sterling. Has the defense reached an agreement?
Prosecutor: Yes, Your Honor. The defendant has agreed to plead guilty to attempted second-degree murder and felony child abuse.
Judge Vance: Before I accept this plea, I will hear a statement from the victim's father, Mr. David Sterling.
David stood up from his seat in the front row, wearing a dark navy suit, his face calm and composed as he walked up to the podium.
David: Your Honor, three months ago, I brought a woman into my home whom I believed would act as a loving mother to my motherless child.
Eleanor: David, please don't do this...
David: Instead, she used my daughter as a pawn to manipulate my estate, eventually dropping her from a fifteen-foot balcony out of pure greed and malice.
Judge Vance: Order in the court. Let the speaker finish.
David: My daughter was three years old. She was helpless, defenseless, and trusted the adults in her home. Eleanor Sterling deserves no mercy, no early parole, and no second chances.
David turned his head, looking directly into Eleanor's pale, trembling face across the well of the court.
David: You thought you could destroy my child to take my money, Eleanor. But you lost everything, and you will spend the best years of your life behind cold steel bars.
Judge Vance: Thank you, Mr. Sterling. The court accepts the guilty plea.
The judge struck her heavy wooden gavel down against the bench, the sound echoing through the high courtroom ceiling.
Judge Vance: I sentence you, Eleanor Sterling, to eighteen years in the state correctional facility without the possibility of parole for the first twelve years.
Eleanor: No! Eighteen years?! You can't do this to me! I'm an educated woman!
Judge Vance: You are a convicted felon, Ms. Sterling. Officers, remove the prisoner from my courtroom.
Two armed bailiffs grabbed Eleanor by her shoulders, hauling her toward the side holding cell door as she sobbed and screamed incoherently.
Eleanor: David! Forgive me! David!
David didn't turn back to look at her once as she was dragged through the heavy steel doors.
He turned and walked out toward the court lobby, where Clara was waiting beside little Mia, who wore a pretty yellow dress with her cast completely removed.
Mia: Daddy! Is the court meeting over now?
David: Yes, my sweet girl. It's completely over. The bad lady will never come near us again.
Clara: How did it go, Mr. Sterling?
David: Eighteen years in state prison, Clara. She's gone for good.
Clara: Thank God justice was served today.
David: Come on, let's go home. I promised Mia we'd build a new playground set in the backyard today.
Mia: Yay! A huge playground with two swings!
David picked Mia up into his arms, lifting her high over his head as she giggled with pure, unbridled joy.
They walked out of the courthouse together into the warm afternoon sunshine, leaving the dark past behind them forever.
