Handcuffs in the Foyer

The Stepmother Who Dropped the Billionaire's Little Daughter

The heavy iron doors swung open again as four private estate guards in dark uniforms entered, followed closely by two city police officers.

Police Officer 1: Mr. Sterling! We received the emergency distress call regarding an assault on a minor.

David: Officer, thank God you're here. My wife, Eleanor Sterling, just dropped my three-year-old daughter off that second-floor balcony onto the marble floor.

Police Officer 1: Is the child okay? Do we need an ambulance unit?

David: My private doctor is en route, but she has visible bruising and a potential fracture in her arm.

Eleanor: Officers! Don't listen to him! He assaulted me! Look at my cheek!

Eleanor rushed down the stairs, pointing wildly at her swollen face as she approached the police.

Eleanor: He slapped me three times! He dragged me by my dress! I am the victim here!

Police Officer 2: Ma'am, step back and stay calm. We need to assess the situation.

David: I struck her to protect my child after watching her throw Mia over the iron railing. We have full high-definition video of the entire incident.

Police Officer 1: Clara, can you show us that video right now on the tablet?

Clara stepped forward, handing the glowing tablet directly to the lead officer.

The two officers leaned in, watching the footage play in silence as the video showed Eleanor holding Mia over the drop and deliberately letting go.

Police Officer 1: Good Lord... she dangled the kid right over the drop.

Police Officer 2: That's direct intent right there. No question about it.

Eleanor: It was a loss of grip! My hands were slippery from lotion! You can't prove intent from a video clip!

Police Officer 1: Ma'am, turn around and place your hands behind your back.

Eleanor: What?! You're arresting me?! Do you know who my father is?! He's Judge Harrison!

Police Officer 1: I don't care if your father is the governor, ma'am. You're being placed under arrest for felony child endangerment, aggravated assault, and attempted murder.

The silver handcuffs clicked loudly around Eleanor's delicate wrists, locking her hands firmly behind her off-white gown.

Eleanor: David! Tell them to stop! You're destroying my family's reputation!

David: You destroyed yourself, Eleanor. I'm just protecting what's left of mine.

Eleanor: You'll regret this, David! My lawyers will strip you of every dime in court!

David: Your lawyers won't even be able to get you bail once the district attorney sees this video feed.

The officers turned Eleanor around, escorting her down the front steps toward the waiting police cruiser in the driveway.

Eleanor: Get your hands off me! David! Help me!

Her desperate screams faded as the heavy rear door of the patrol car slammed shut, the red and blue emergency lights reflecting off the mansion's tall glass windows.

David turned back toward the sitting room as Dr. Evans, the family pediatrician, rushed through the entryway carrying his medical kit.

Dr. Evans: David! I came as fast as I could! Where is little Mia?

David: She's right here on the sofa, Doctor. Please check her arm and her legs right away.

Dr. Evans: Let's take a look at you, sweetie. You were very brave today.

Mia looked up at Dr. Evans, holding onto David's velvet blazer sleeve with her other hand as the doctor gently examined her wrist.

Dr. Evans: Her wrist has a mild greenstick fracture from the landing, David. We need to put a small cast on it, but she's going to be okay.

David: Thank God... thank God she's safe.

David sank down onto his knees beside the couch, burying his face gently into Mia's hair as tears of pure relief finally spilled down his cheeks.
