A Terrible Fall Down Marble

The Stepmother Pushed Her Down The Grand Staircase

Arthur: How could you be so heartless, you monster! Look at what you just destroyed!

Clara: Arthur, please! You don't understand what happened!

Arthur: I see my only daughter bleeding on the floor at the base of the stairs while you stand up there!

Clara: Please listen to me, it was a complete loss of control! I never wanted this!

Arthur: Save that excuse! Your cruelty ends right here, right now!

Arthur stood up abruptly, his jaw clenched in pure rage as he started climbing the marble steps toward the balcony. His heavy footsteps echoed off the high walls with every powerful stride.

Clara: Arthur, stop! Don't come up here like that! It was an accident!

Arthur: An accident?! She was standing five feet away from the edge when I walked through those doors!

Clara: She tripped on her own dress! I reached out to catch her, I swear!

Arthur: You were screaming at her and waving your arms like a lunatic! I saw you shove her!

Arthur reached the top of the landing, closing the distance between them until he was standing directly over Clara. She backed away against the balcony railing, tears streaming down her face.

Clara: Arthur, darling, look at me! I love you! Why would I ever hurt Elena?!

Arthur: Because she discovered what you were doing with the family trust fund!

Clara: She was making up lies to push me out of your life!

Arthur: The private investigator called me twenty minutes ago, Clara. He verified every single offshore account you opened under my name!

Clara's face drained of color as she pressed her back harder against the cold brass railing.

Clara: He... he's mistaken. My family lawyer set up those accounts for estate tax planning!

Arthur: Estate tax planning doesn't involve moving millions of dollars into a private account in the Cayman Islands three days before filing for divorce!

Clara: I wasn't going to file for divorce!

Arthur: I saw the draft papers on your laptop last night, Clara! You thought I was too blind and stupid to notice!

Down at the bottom of the stairs, Elena groaned softly, her hand moving weakly against the polished marble floor.

Elena: Dad... help me...

Arthur turned his head sharply, hearing his daughter's faint voice over the sound of Clara's frantic sobbing.

Arthur: Hang on, sweetheart! Daddy's coming!

Clara: Arthur, don't leave me up here! We need to figure out what we're going to say to the paramedics!

Arthur: The paramedics are going to hear the exact truth. And so are the police officers I called from my car!

Arthur turned his back on Clara and hurried back down the steps, kneeling beside Elena and gently cradling her head in his lap.

Arthur: Keep still, Elena. Don't try to move your neck.

Elena: My arm... it hurts so bad, Dad...

Arthur: I know, baby. The ambulance is two minutes away. Just stay with me, please.

Clara: Arthur, if you tell the police I pushed her, they'll arrest me for attempted murder!

Arthur: Then you better get comfortable with that thought, because that's exactly where you're going!
