A loud knock suddenly echoed from the heavy front entrance doors of the mansion.
Mark kept his eyes locked on Evelyn as he stepped backward toward the door.
He pulled the front door open, revealing a man holding a briefcase.
It was a private legal notary hired by Evelyn to sign the false papers.
Mark: Can I help you with something on my private property today?
Notary: I am here for Mrs. Evelyn to notarize trust modification paperwork.
Mark: This paperwork contains fraudulent signatures and illegal property transfers.
The notary looked visibly surprised and glanced quickly toward Evelyn inside the hall.
Notary: Sir, I was told all parties had agreed to this transaction.
Mark: I am the estate trustee, and I never authorized any of this action.
Mark: Furthermore, my attorney and the local police department are on their way.
The notary packed his official stamp back into his leather bag without hesitation.
Notary: I am leaving immediately and canceling this notary appointment right now.
The notary turned quickly and walked down the stone steps toward his car.
Mark closed the grand door firmly and bolted the lock from the inside.
He turned back around to find Evelyn trying to gather her personal coat.
Evelyn: I am leaving this house before your dramatic lawyer arrives here.
Mark: You are not going anywhere until the officers inspect this property.
Evelyn: You cannot keep me locked inside this hallway against my will!
Mark: I am keeping my children safe from a woman who abused them!
Emily sat on the rug, holding baby Toby safely in her lap.
She watched her father defend their home with newfound relief in her eyes.
Emily: Daddy, my crutches are inside the hall closet behind the coats.
Mark walked over to the tall oak closet near the front grand entrance.
He pulled open the wooden door and retrieved Emily's aluminum crutches immediately.
He brought them directly over to his daughter and helped her stand up.
Mark: Here you go, sweetheart. You are safe now, I promise you.
Emily: Thank you for coming back home early today, Daddy.
Mark: I will never let anyone hurt either of you ever again in life.
Evelyn watched from the far corner with a look of pure bitter defeat.
The sound of approaching police sirens echoed down the quiet suburban street.
