The Broken Home Entrance

The Secret Will That Saved Two Courageous Young Children

Mark pulled his silver sedan into the wide brick driveway of his suburban home.

The afternoon sun reflected off the tall glass windows of the quiet neighborhood mansion.

He carried a heavy leather briefcase full of client documents from his downtown office.

He had spent the entire morning in stressful corporate meetings regarding a high value estate settlement.

The quiet neighborhood street felt peaceful, but an unusual silence hung over his own front lawn.

Mark stepped out of his vehicle and walked briskly up the stone entrance steps.

He expected to hear the familiar sound of his children playing in the living room.

Instead, the grand double doors sat slightly open without any sound coming from inside.

A deep feeling of anxiety suddenly tightens inside his chest as he unlocked the main entrance.

He pushed the wooden door open slowly, letting out a soft creak across the hardwood floor.

Mark: Hello? Is anyone home right now?

His voice echoed through the high ceiling hallway without receiving an immediate response.

He stepped into the main entryway and dropped his heavy leather briefcase onto the floor.

The sudden loud thud echoed against the tall white walls displaying their family portraits.

Then he heard a faint muffled sob coming from the grand hallway further inside.

Mark: Emily? Are you upstairs, sweetheart?

He picked up his pace as the sound of soft crying became louder and clearer.

Around the corner, his ten-year-old daughter Emily was slowly crawling across the hard floor.

She was struggling on her hands and knees while wearing a leg brace for her injury.

On her back, her baby brother Toby clung tightly to her shirt while sobbing heavily.

Mark: Emily! Oh my goodness, what is happening here?

Mark sprinted across the polished floor with his heart pounding wildly inside his chest.

He dropped to his knees immediately right beside his weeping young daughter and baby son.

He wrapped his strong arms around both children to comfort their trembling little bodies.

Mark: I am right here now! Daddy is right here!

Emily: Daddy, you came back early! You came back for us!

Mark: Shh, take a breath. What happened to your crutches?

Emily: I had to drag Toby out of the nursery before she came back.

Mark lifted the crying baby safely into his arms and held him against his shoulder.

He used his other hand to gently lift Emily up from the cold hardwood floor.

Tears had washed clean streaks through the dust on his young daughter's pale cheeks.

Mark: Why are you crawling like this? Where is your stepmother?

Emily looked down toward the long corridor leading to the private back office suite.

Her small hand trembled as she squeezed her father's sleeve in deep emotional distress.

Emily: Mommy took my crutches away so I could not leave the room.

Mark: She did what? Why would she ever do that to you?

Emily: She said we had to stay quiet while she checked the trust documents.

Mark felt a cold chill run down his spine as he digested his daughter's words.

He looked up toward the archway leading into the formal dining room area.

Standing quietly in the shadows near the doorway was his wife Evelyn.

She held a thick manila folder in her hands with a completely calm expression.

Mark: Evelyn, explain to me right now what is going on in this house!
