The afternoon sun was warm over the quiet neighborhood in Dallas, Texas.
Sarah stood near the patio table while adjusting the soft pink blanket around her newborn daughter.
The white walls of the large house usually brought her a deep sense of peace.
However, today the air felt heavy and cold inside the backyard.
Her mother-in-law, Evelyn, stood near the edge of the stone patio with a strict look on her face.
Evelyn had never approved of Sarah marrying her son, Mark.
She believed that Sarah came from a modest background and was only interested in the estate.
Mark was inside the kitchen preparing cold beverages for everyone.
He hoped that this family gathering would finally heal the old wounds between his mother and his wife.
Sarah held her baby girl closer as she felt Evelyn's sharp gaze on her.
"Is there something wrong, Evelyn?" Sarah asked in a soft tone.
"Everything is wrong with how my son runs his life now," Evelyn replied coldly.
She stepped closer to the stone seating area near the lawn.
"My family worked for decades to build this legacy," Evelyn added.
"I built my life with Mark based on love," Sarah said quietly.
"Love does not pay the mortgage or secure a trust fund," Evelyn snapped back.
Sarah took a deep breath and looked toward the kitchen window.
She wished Mark would step outside to ease the rising tension between them.
Evelyn folded her arms tightly across her chest.
"You think you belong here, but you never will," Evelyn whispered sharply.
Sarah took a step back toward the open glass doors.
She did not want to argue in front of her helpless baby girl.
The wind blew softly through the green oak trees in the yard.
It felt like a calm storm was gathering over the family house.
Sarah adjusted the pink swaddle once more to protect her baby from the breeze.
"I think you should leave if you only came to insult me," Sarah said with courage.
Evelyn raised her eyebrows in total disbelief.
"You dare tell me to leave my own son's house?" Evelyn shouted.
Her harsh voice echoed off the white outdoor walls.
Mark heard the shouting from inside and set down the glass pitcher on the counter.
He rushed toward the back patio to see what was happening.
The quiet afternoon had completely shattered in a single second.
