Secrets of the Past

The Rich Stepmother Dumbed My Bag But Found Her Worse Nightmare

David held the small vintage picture out in front of him, comparing the child's features to the young woman standing in front of him. The truth was staring him right in the face, undeniable and powerful. Thirty years ago, Arthur Vance's first wife had vanished with their infant daughter after a terrible misunderstanding orchestrated by greedy relatives who wanted control of the family business. Arthur had spent millions on private investigators, divorce lawyers, and search teams, but he could never find his missing baby. Before he died two years ago, Arthur had placed thirty percent of the entire estate into an untouchable trust fund, managed by his lifelong family lawyer, waiting for the day his lost child would return. David had always assumed the story was just a painful legend, but now the living proof was standing in his hallway.

David: Why didn't you ever tell me who you were when you applied for this job?

Hannah: I didn't come here to ask for money or take anything from you, David.

Evelyn: Don't call him by his first name, you low-class peasant!

David: Evelyn, if you open your mouth one more time, I will have security throw you out!

Hannah: My mother was very sick... she told me the truth only two months before she passed away.

Hannah took a deep breath, trying to steady her voice as she recounted the long years of hardship her mother had faced. After leaving the city decades ago, her mother had worked two jobs just to pay rent on a small apartment, living under a changed name to avoid trouble. They lived paycheck to paycheck, never knowing the massive fortune that belonged to their family line. When her mother fell ill, the medical bills stacked up, forcing Hannah to look for work anywhere she could find it. She had seen an ad for a housekeeping position at the Vance estate and took it, not out of greed, but out of a deep desire to see the house where her father had lived and breathed.

Hannah: I just wanted to feel close to the father I never got to know growing up.

David: You spent six months sweeping our floors while carrying our father's blood?

Hannah: I was afraid you would think I was just another greedy stranger looking for a handout.

Evelyn: Because that is exactly what you are! A fake impostor looking for an easy settlement!

Evelyn stepped forward aggressively, her face red with frustration as her blue sequined dress rustled loudly. She knew what this revelation meant for her own financial future. When Arthur Vance died, Evelyn had fought viciously through her divorce lawyers and probate attorneys to claim as much of the mansion and liquid assets as possible. If a legal biological heir suddenly appeared with verified proof and a birth certificate, Evelyn's share of the inheritance and monthly trust payouts would be instantly slashed in half. Panic began to consume her mind, driving her to extreme anger as she tried to regain control of the situation before David could take any legal action.

Evelyn: David, think logically for once! Anyone can buy an old photo and write a fake note!

David: This is not just a photo, Evelyn. Look at her face... look at her eyes!

Evelyn: I don't care about her eyes! She was going through my private room today!

Hannah: That is a lie! You called me into your room to clean your jewelry box, Mrs. Vance!

Evelyn: You sneaky little rat! How dare you accuse me of lying in my own house!
