The Silent Empty Dining Hall

The Rich Stepmother Cruelly Knocked My Daughter's Plate Away

Mark pulled his silver car into the long gravel driveway of his quiet suburban estate.

The sun was shining bright through the tall glass windows of the big brick home.

He had spent three long days away in Chicago taking care of urgent business meetings.

All he wanted was to hug his four year old daughter Lily again.

Mark had built a very successful software firm from the ground up over ten hard years.

His wealth allowed him to provide everything his family could ever need or dream of.

Yet his heart had been heavy ever since his late wife passed away two years ago.

He hired home care workers and tried his best to keep life normal for little Lily.

Six months ago he met a woman named Evelyn at a local charity event for business owners.

Evelyn was elegant and wore expensive designer dresses whenever they went out together.

She seemed kind and always brought sweet simple toys for Lily during her afternoon visits.

Mark thought she might eventually make a wonderful loving mother figure for his child.

He stepped quietly through the heavy double front doors with his rolling leather suitcase.

The front hall was completely silent except for a soft radio playing in the rear kitchen.

Mark: Hello? Is anyone home right now?

No one answered his call from the spacious living room.

He smiled and decided to walk down the hallway to surprise his little princess.

He expected to see Lily sitting at the table eating an afternoon meal before nap time.

As he neared the dining hall he heard harsh shouting echoing off the marble floor.

Evelyn: You are a messy child who does not deserve nice things!

Mark stopped instantly in his tracks near the wooden doorway frame.

His smile faded completely as his heart began to pound heavily in his chest.

He peered around the doorway corner to look inside the bright sunlit dining space.

Evelyn was standing over Lily while wearing a bright red silk evening dress.

A white ceramic plate lay shattered in pieces across the floor near the large table.

Slices of fresh fruit and warm buttered toast were scattered all over the polished stone.

Lily was sitting on the cold floor in her cream dress with red teary eyes.

Lily: I am sorry Evelyn! I did not mean to drop it!

Evelyn: You did that on purpose just to annoy me today!

Mark felt a cold chill run down his back as he listened to Evelyn yell.

He had never heard her use such a mean tone around his child before.

She always acted gentle whenever Mark was standing nearby in the room.

Now her face looked cold and full of deep sharp anger.

Evelyn: If you want food then you can eat it off the floor!

Lily: But I am really hungry and I want my daddy!

Evelyn: Your daddy is far away in another city and cannot hear you!

Mark tightened his grip on his suitcase handle until his knuckles turned pale white.

He could not believe the awful scene happening right in front of his eyes.

The sweet caring woman he trusted was treating his child like garbage.

He stepped out from behind the wall into full view of the entire room.
