The marble foyer of the Vance estate was massive, echoey, and completely cold. David Vance sat in his study with a glass of whiskey, listening to the heavy silence that had settled over the house since his wife passed away six months ago. His seven-year-old son, Mateo, had stopped speaking in full sentences. Instead, the boy lashed out at everyone who tried to get close. Every nanny David hired walked out within a week, claiming the child was impossible to control.
Elena stood near the entrance, holding a duster and wearing her simple maid uniform. She had worked for the Vance family for only three weeks, but she noticed how Mateo watched the front door every single afternoon, waiting for a mother who was never coming back. Today, the emotional pressure finally broke the young boy completely.
Mateo came running down the grand staircase, his eyes red and swollen. He spotted Elena standing near the wall below the large American flag. Without warning, he sprinted across the white marble floor, his small sneakers squeaking against the polished stone.
Elena: Mateo, stop!
The boy hit her hard against her waist, throwing his entire small body weight into the strike. Elena winced from the sudden impact, but she did not step back, nor did she raise her arm to push him away.
Mateo: NO!
The scream echoed through the entire lower level of the mansion. Mateo burst into wild, heavy sobs, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. His entire chest was heaving as tears streamed down his cheeks, making his navy polo shirt wet at the collar. Elena slowly lowered herself down onto the cold marble floor until she was at eye level with the child.
Elena: That hurt, Mateo. I'm not going to run from you, and I'm not going to yell.
Her voice was completely steady, filled with warmth rather than anger. Mateo stared at her in shock, his hands trembling as he realized she wasn't angry or running away like the others. In the doorway of the study, David stepped out, holding his whiskey glass tightly, frozen by the scene unfolding in his front hallway.
Mateo: Mommy... I'm sorry... please don't stop loving me!
Elena: I will always love you, sweetie.
The boy collapsed forward into Elena's arms, burying his face into her shoulder. She wrapped her arms around him, holding him securely under the warm daylight streaming through the high windows. David stood in the background, the ice in his glass rattling quietly as his hand shook with sudden, overwhelming emotion.
