Justice on the Pool Deck

The Maid Jumped Into the Pool to Save the Baby

Officer Miller: You have the right to remain silent, ma'am. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.

Victoria: You are making a huge mistake! My father will have your badges for this!

Officer Davis: Walk, ma'am. Don't make us carry you out to the cruiser.

The two police officers escorted the weeping Victoria down the marble steps toward the iron gate, her high heels scraping uselessly against the stone pathway. The loud click of the police cruiser door echoed through the yard a moment later, followed by the distant sound of sirens as the emergency medical team pulled into the long driveway. Maya stood shivering in her wet uniform, water dripping from her hair onto the patio floor.

Leo: Maya! Are you okay? Your hands are shaking!

Maya: I am fine, Leo. Thank you... thank you for saving me with that tablet.

Leo: I saw her near the pool earlier acting strange, so I set up my tablet on the window sill to record her. I knew she was up to something bad.

Richard: Maya... I don't even know what to say to you. I was so blind.

Maya: You were just scared for your daughter, Mr. Sterling. Anyone would be confused in that moment.

Richard: That is no excuse. I screamed at you while you were bleeding and wet from saving my child's life. I almost let them take you to prison.

Richard stepped forward, holding baby Emma securely against his chest. The infant had finally stopped crying, her small eyes looking up at Maya as she sucked on her tiny thumb. Richard looked down at the wet patio tiles, his shoulders shaking with quiet guilt.

Richard: You dove into that water without second thought. You put your own life on the line while my own wife tried to destroy us.

Maya: I could not just stand there and watch a baby drown, Mr. Sterling. No matter what happened to me.

Richard: You are more than a maid in this house, Maya. Starting today, you are family.

Leo: Can Maya stay with us forever, Dad? Please?

Richard: If she will have us, Leo. I am going to fire the rest of the security staff for letting Victoria tamper with the cameras, and I want you to manage this entire house, Maya.

Maya: Manage the estate? Mr. Sterling, I am just a cleaner...

Richard: You are the bravest person I have ever met. I am offering you the position of head estate manager, with full salary, housing for your family, and a college trust for your own children.

Maya looked at the little girl resting safely in Richard's arms, then back at Leo's smiling face. The cold wind blew across the patio, but inside her chest, a warm feeling finally settled over the horror of the afternoon.

Maya: I would be honored to stay, Mr. Sterling.
