The sun beat down on the polished marble patio of the Sterling estate, casting bright reflections across the crystal-clear pool water. Maya kept her eyes low as she smoothed the fabric of her black and white maid uniform, listening to the quiet hum of the filters. Across the yard, Victoria stood near the large American flag fluttering against the stone pillars, her beige designer dress looking pristine in the afternoon light. In front of her sat the high-end stroller where baby Emma lay fast asleep under a thin cotton blanket.
Victoria: Make sure you finish scrubbing the outdoor lounge table before Mr. Sterling gets home, Maya.
Maya: Yes, Mrs. Sterling. I am almost done with the patio edge.
Victoria: Good. She needs complete quiet right now, so do not go near the stroller.
Maya turned back toward her bucket, but out of the corner of her eye, she noticed something terrifying. Victoria casually put her hand against the handlebar of the heavy baby stroller. With a slow, deliberate nudge, she pushed it straight toward the deep end of the pool.
Maya: Stop! Mrs. Sterling, no!
Victoria: Oh, look at that. What a terrible mistake.
The stroller crashed into the water with a massive splash, sinking instantly under the weight of the frame and dragging the swaddled baby under the surface. Maya did not hesitate for a single second. She sprinted across the slick marble patio and launched herself mid-air straight into the deep end.
Maya: Hold on, Emma! I am coming!
The icy water hit her like a brick wall as she plunged beneath the surface, her uniform pulling her down. Down at the bottom of the pool, the stroller was tilting sideways on the blue tile floor, the infant strapped inside and struggling against the weight. Maya kicked her feet frantically, her lungs burning as she stretched her fingers toward the sinking stroller. But as her hand touched the handle, she realized Victoria was already turning toward the house to scream for help, ready to point the blame.
