The heavy air inside the grand palace hallway grew thick with tension. Evelyn lay curled on the marble floor, her blue gown rumpled, her manicured nails digging into the stone tiles as she wept in total defeat.
Julian dropped back down to his knees beside Clara and his two sons. Tears overflowed his eyes as he reached out, pulling Clara and the twin boys into a tight, warm embrace.
Julian: Clara... Can you ever forgive me? I was so blind... I believed her lies without checking the hospital files myself.
Clara: You were grieving, Julian. You thought you lost the woman you loved.
Julian: I looked at your photograph every single night for seven years. I told the boys about you every time they asked about their mother.
Leo: Dad told us you were an angel in heaven, Clara.
Clara: I wasn't in heaven, my sweet boy. I was working three cleaning jobs just to afford a small apartment five miles away from this palace.
Toby: Were you near the park where we ride our bikes?
Clara: I watched you play near the fountain every Saturday afternoon from my window, Toby. I held my breath every time you ran near the water.
Julian buried his face in Clara's neck, his shoulders shaking with silent sobs as the immense weight of seven wasted years broke over him.
Julian: You were so close... You were right there, and I didn't know...
Clara: I applied for the cleaning job at the agency three weeks ago when I saw the advertisement for the estate. I just wanted to touch their little hands once before I died.
Leo: You don't have to clean the floors anymore, Mommy. You can stay in our big room upstairs!
Toby: Yes! We have two big beds and lots of toys!
Evelyn pushed herself up from the floor, her eyes red and wild as she glared at the happy family kneeling on the floor.
Evelyn: You think you're going to live happily ever after in my palace?! My father's corporate firm owns forty percent of the voting stock in Montgomery Global!
Julian: Your father's firm was placed under federal receivership two hours ago, Evelyn. Lawyer Vance just confirmed it.
Evelyn: What?! That's impossible! My father is the chairman!
Julian: Your father was arrested at the airport trying to flee to Switzerland with three million dollars of stolen investor capital.
Evelyn gasped, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water as her last desperate shield crumbled to dust.
Distant sirens began to wail through the night air outside the palace windows, their sharp red and blue lights flashing against the white stone pillars of the grand driveway.
Julian: The police are here, Evelyn. Your reign in this house is officially over.
