Sarah remained on her knees on the cold marble, cradling baby Leo safely against her chest.
She rocked the child softly as her breath came in rapid, shaky ragged gasps.
Above her, Victoria leaned against the balcony railing, trying quickly to collect her scattered thoughts.
Victoria quickly smoothed down her expensive champagne dress and tried to adjust her fake smile.
Heavy wooden front doors swung open at the far end of the wide sunlit foyer.
Julian Sterling walked inside carrying his leather briefcase after returning early from an emergency meeting.
He took three steps before noticing Sarah kneeling on the floor with tears streaming down.
Julian dropped his heavy briefcase onto the marble floor and rushed across the wide room.
Julian: Sarah, what happened here? Is Leo alright?
Sarah: He is safe, sir! I caught him just in time!
Julian reached down gently and lifted his small son into his own secure arms.
He held the baby close, noticing how hard Sarah was trembling on the floor.
Julian: What do you mean you caught him? What happened?
Sarah: Sir, she pushed the bassinet right toward the edge deliberately!
Julian turned his head sharply, his eyes fixing directly on the upper floor railing.
Victoria was already marching quickly down the grand marble staircase with her hands held high.
Her voice echoed loudly off the bright white walls as she put on a dramatic show.
Victoria: Julian, thank goodness you are home! The maid acted completely crazy!
Sarah: That is not true! You tried to let him fall!
Victoria: Keep your quiet mouth shut! You clumsy girl slipped while moving furniture!
Victoria reached the bottom step, breathing heavily as she tried to take Julian's arm.
Julian stepped back immediately, protecting the baby and looking at his wife with deep suspicion.
Julian: Sarah has protected my son since the day he was brought home.
Victoria: Are you taking the word of a servant over your own wife, Julian?
Sarah: Look at the balcony floor, sir! The bassinet marks are still right there!
Julian looked up toward the bright landing where the wooden bassinet was still leaning awkwardly.
The truth began to settle heavy and dark inside the warm, bright morning air.
