The Silent Shadow in Foyer

The Maid Caught the Toddler Before She Could Fall

The morning sun flooded the grand foyer of the suburban estate.

Polished white marble floors reflected the warm light streaming through high windows.

Sarah adjusted her plain grey apron while holding a soft dusting cloth.

She had worked for the Sterling family for nearly two whole years.

Her main duty was caring for young Lily, who was only three.

Lily was a sweet child with bright eyes and soft blonde curls.

Ever since Richard lost his first wife, Lily was his whole world.

Six months ago, Richard married a glamorous woman named Elena.

Elena always wore designer dresses and expensive shiny orange silk gowns.

She smiled when Richard was watching, but her voice turned cold when he left.

Sarah noticed how Elena pulled back whenever Lily reached out for a hug.

Elena preferred quiet mornings without a small child playing near her high heels.

On this particular Tuesday, Richard had an early morning corporate meeting across town.

He kissed Lily on the forehead before picking up his black leather briefcase.

Richard: Be a good girl for Sarah today, little princess.

Lily: Daddy bring me back a pink toy please!

Richard: I promise I will bring you two pink toys, sweetie.

Richard smiled warmly at Elena as she stood near the dark mahogany front doors.

Elena: Drive safely darling, I will manage the household today.

Richard: Thank you sweetheart, I know everything is in good hands.

The heavy front door clicked shut as Richard went toward his luxury car.

As soon as his engine started, Elena's warm smile completely disappeared.

She turned on her high heels and stared directly at Sarah with sharp eyes.

Elena: Take the girl upstairs to her playroom right now, maid.

Sarah: Yes Mrs. Sterling, I will bring her toy box right up.

Lily held onto Sarah's soft cotton sleeve as they walked toward the staircase.

The grand staircase curved gracefully up toward the upper balcony area.

Elena walked behind them, her silk dress rustling against the smooth steps.

Sarah felt a strange cold chill in her stomach despite the bright morning sun.

She had seen Elena looking at Richard's life insurance papers late last night.

Elena wanted full control over the family estate and the family inheritance money.

Sarah kept a firm grip on Lily's little hand as they reached the landing.

She knew that protecting this innocent girl was her most important job now.
