The living room was quiet as David sat on the plush sofa with Lily.
Emily sat right beside her sister, sharing a box of colorful crayons.
Lily was smiling as she drew simple pictures on a white pad of paper.
David watched his two daughters with a mixture of love and lingering anger.
He could not wrap his mind around the cruelty of Clara's brother, Richard.
Five minutes later, the heavy front door opened and Marcus walked in fast.
Marcus was a senior partner at a top law firm in the city.
He carried a thick leather briefcase packed with legal papers and records.
Marcus: David, I got your urgent message on my way from the courthouse.
Marcus stopped in his tracks when he saw the young girl on the couch.
Marcus: My god, David... she looks just like Clara did years ago.
David: Because she is Clara's daughter, Marcus.
David explained everything he had uncovered over the last hour.
He pointed toward the opened wall panel down the main hallway corridor.
Marcus set his briefcase on the coffee table and opened it quickly.
Marcus: If Lily is alive, Richard's claim to the trust is completely fraudulent.
David: He told me four years ago that the baby died in the delivery room.
Marcus: He controlled the private clinic where Clara was admitted that night.
Sarah sat in an armchair across the room, weeping silently into her hands.
Sarah: Richard brought her here late at night while you were out of town.
Sarah: He said he would frame David for financial fraud if I spoke out.
David: So you chose to hide a frightened child in a narrow wall cavity?
Sarah: I was terrified, David! I brought her food and blankets every day!
David: Emily was the one who led me to her today, Sarah!
Marcus pulled out a stack of financial documents from his leather bag.
Marcus: We need an official DNA test to confirm lineage for the court.
David: Order the fastest emergency swab kit available immediately, Marcus.
Marcus: I will also file a petition to freeze the inheritance trust fund right now.
Lily looked up from her drawing and patted David's knee gently.
Lily: Don't be mad, Daddy. The wall was warm with my blankets.
David swallowed hard as tears threatened to spill down his face again.
No child should ever have to live inside a hidden wall compartment.
He wrapped his arm around Lily and kissed the top of her head softly.
David: You will never have to hide in the dark again, my sweet girl.
Marcus pulled out his phone to call the state police commissioner directly.
Marcus: Commissioner, we have an emergency situation regarding a missing child and fraud.
David looked over at Sarah, his expression cold and completely firm.
David: Pack your bags, Sarah. We will settle your role in this later.
Sarah nodded slowly, knowing she had made a terrible, cowardly mistake.
The front doorbell rang loudly through the high-ceilinged entrance hall.
David stood up slowly, keeping Lily safely behind his back.
