David walked through the grand front entrance of his quiet estate.
He set his leather briefcase down on the shiny wooden floor.
The house was usually completely silent at this time of afternoon.
He walked toward the main hallway near the large framed flag.
That was when he spotted his tiny toddler daughter, Emily.
She was walking slowly while balancing a small white plate in her hands.
On the plate sat three neatly cut peanut butter sandwiches.
David smiled softly as he watched his young daughter navigate the long corridor.
He wondered if she was carrying a afternoon snack to her playroom.
However, Emily did not turn toward the large playroom at the end of the hall.
Instead, she stopped right beside a decorative wooden wall panel.
She carefully lowered herself down onto her small knees.
She set the plate down right against the polished white trim of the baseboard.
David frowned in confusion as he stepped closer to his daughter.
David: Emily, sweetheart, what are you doing with those plates?
The little girl looked up at him with innocent, wide eyes.
Emily: Feeding the quiet friend, Daddy.
David chuckled nervously because he thought it was just an imaginary playmate.
Then he noticed a faint scrape mark along the bottom edge of the wall panel.
He leaned down closer to inspect the polished wood molding near the floor.
His wife, Sarah, walked out from the kitchen holding a basket of folded laundry.
She froze in place the moment she saw David kneeling near the wall panel.
Sarah: David, what are you doing down on the floor?
David: Look at this molding, Sarah, it seems slightly misaligned.
Sarah adjusted the basket in her arms and took a slow step backward.
Sarah: It is just an old house with settling foundation lines, honey.
David put his thumb against the edge of the dark oak trim.
He pushed firmly against the decorative wood molding to test its strength.
A low creaking sound echoed down the quiet, brightly lit hallway.
The hidden wall panel popped open by half an inch into the room.
David pulled his hand back in total surprise as the door shifted.
He had lived in this house for three full years without knowing this panel existed.
David: Sarah, did you know there was a hollow space inside this wall?
Sarah did not answer him as she gripped the laundry basket tighter.
David placed his fingers along the edge of the small door panel.
He pulled the secret door open wide to look inside the dark cavity.
A cold draft of air rushed out into the warm hallway instantly.
David peered into the narrow space between the double drywall studs.
He saw a small pile of soft blankets sitting on the wooden floorboards.
Beside the blankets sat several empty juice boxes and crumpled snack wrappers.
David felt his heart begin to beat rapidly against his chest.
David: What on earth is going on in here?
A sudden soft rustle came from deep inside the dark wall space.
Two pale hands pulled a thick woolen blanket down from a tiny face.
A young girl sat curled up tightly against the inner support beam.
She had messy brown hair and big, trembling dark eyes full of fear.
David gasped aloud as he stared at the hidden child in complete shock.
He reached his right hand out toward the shivering child very gently.
David: Please don't be afraid. I am right here and I will protect you.
The little girl stared at his face for a long, silent moment.
David: Oh god... tell me, who are you hiding from?
The child slowly reached out her tiny hand toward his trembling face.
She gently stroked his cheek with her warm, soft fingers.
Child: Daddy... you finally came to save me...
