Emma: “If Noah saw Rebecca put the necklace in my bag, then search her things.”
Rebecca immediately shook her head.
Rebecca: “You have no right.”
Daniel: “Nobody is searching anyone.”
Noah: “Dad, why?”
Daniel turned toward his son.
Daniel: “Because I said so.”
Noah's eyes filled with tears.
Noah: “You always tell me that lying is wrong.”
Daniel looked away.
The front door suddenly opened.
A private security officer entered the room.
Security Officer: “Sir, the police are outside.”
Emma looked shocked.
Emma: “You called the police?”
Daniel: “Yes.”
Emma: “Even after Noah told you what he saw?”
Daniel: “The police will decide what happened.”
Two officers entered.
Daniel handed them the jewelry box.
Daniel: “The necklace was found in her bag.”
One officer looked at Emma.
Officer: “Did you steal it?”
Emma: “No.”
Officer: “Did you put it in your bag?”
Emma: “No.”
The officer turned toward Noah.
Officer: “Son, did you actually see someone put it there?”
Noah: “Yes.”
Officer: “Who?”
Noah pointed at Rebecca.
Noah: “Her.”
Rebecca began shaking her head.
Rebecca: “He's just trying to protect Emma.”
Noah: “I don't even know why she did it.”
The officer asked Noah where he had been standing.
Noah walked toward the staircase.
Noah: “Right here.”
He pointed toward a hallway mirror.
Noah: “I could see everything in the reflection.”
The officer looked at the mirror.
Then he looked at the hallway.
Officer: “Can you show me exactly what happened?”
Noah nodded.
He walked toward Emma's bag.
Noah: “Rebecca came from the study. She was holding the necklace.”
Rebecca interrupted.
Rebecca: “That's not true.”
Noah: “Then she opened Emma's bag and put it inside.”
The officer looked at Daniel.
Officer: “Is there another security system?”
Daniel hesitated.
Daniel: “No.”
Rebecca suddenly looked nervous.
The officer noticed.
Officer: “Why does she look frightened?”
Daniel: “She's grieving.”
Officer: “Maybe.”
The officer walked toward the hallway.
He noticed a small camera mounted near the ceiling.
Officer: “What's that?”
Daniel froze.
Daniel: “That's an old camera.”
Officer: “Is it working?”
Daniel didn't answer.
The security officer checked the system.
Security Officer: “It's recording.”
Rebecca suddenly stepped backward.
Rebecca: “You don't need to watch that.”
The officer looked directly at her.
Officer: “Now I definitely do.”
The footage appeared on the monitor.
Everyone watched in silence.
The recording showed Rebecca leaving the study.
She looked around.
Then she walked directly toward Emma's bag.
She opened it.
She placed the necklace inside.
Emma covered her mouth.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Officer: “That's enough.”
Rebecca started crying.
Rebecca: “Daniel, please.”
Daniel: “Why would you do this?”
Rebecca: “Because I needed money.”
Daniel looked stunned.
Rebecca: “I thought if Emma was arrested, nobody would question me.”
Then the officer found something even more disturbing.
Another file on the security system showed Rebecca entering the house several times during the previous month.
Each time, something valuable disappeared.
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
Daniel: “How much did you take?”
Rebecca lowered her head.
Rebecca: “More than you know.”
The officer stepped forward.
Officer: “Rebecca, you're under arrest.”
Daniel looked at Emma.
Daniel: “I'm sorry.”
Emma didn't answer.
She was still trying to understand how close she had come to losing everything.
