A Father's Horror In Foyer

The Leash Around My Daughter's Neck

Richard: Hey! Get away from my daughter!

Richard slammed his knees onto the hard marble floor, sliding the last few feet toward Lily. He extended his arms frantically, scooping the tiny, trembling child into his chest and holding her against his blue business suit.

Lily: Daddy! Daddy! You came back!

Richard: I'm here, baby. I've got you. You're safe now. Daddy has you.

Lily: She tied me... she hit me on the floor, Daddy!

Richard: Shh, don't look at her, sweetie. Keep your face right here against my shoulder.

Lily buried her tear-stained face into Richard's neck, her small hands clutching his lapels so tightly her knuckles turned white. Richard stroked her soft hair, feeling her whole body shudder with uncontrollable sobs.

Evelyn: Richard, darling, listen to me before you jump to conclusions!

Richard: Jump to conclusions?! I just walked in and saw you holding a metal chain attached to my child!

Evelyn: It's not what it looks like, I swear! She was running toward the pool outside, and I was just trying to keep her safe!

Richard: Safe?! Look at her face, Evelyn! Look at the bruises on her arms!

Evelyn: She fell on the patio furniture yesterday while you were at the office! You know how clumsy she is!

Richard: She is three years old! You have a chain leash in your hand!

Evelyn dropped the chain, the metal clinking loudly against the marble. Her posture softened instantly, her face crumbling as tears began streaming down her cheeks.

Evelyn: I'm here... you're safe, Lily... I was only trying to discipline her so she wouldn't hurt herself!

Richard: Don't you dare speak her name! Don't you dare act like you care about her!

Evelyn: Richard, please! I love this family! I came into this mansion to be a good stepmother to your daughter!

Richard: You didn't come here to be a mother, Evelyn. You came here for my money and my late wife's estate!

Evelyn: That's not true! I love you, Richard! We built a life here together!

Richard: You built a house of horror behind my back!

Richard stood up carefully, cradling Lily tightly against his chest with one arm while reaching into his coat pocket with his free hand. He pulled out his phone and tapped the screen twice.

Evelyn: Who are you calling?! Richard, talk to me!

Richard: Look at the wall behind you, Evelyn.

Evelyn turned her head slowly toward the wall-mounted smart security tablet near the grand staircase. The screen, which was usually dark during the day, was glowing brightly with a high-definition surveillance feed. On the monitor, a live recording was playing back in crystal clear quality—showing Evelyn dragging Lily across the hallway by the collar while the child screamed for help.

Evelyn: No... no, those cameras were turned off! I disabled the system this morning!

Richard: You disabled the main console in the living room, Evelyn. You didn't know about the secondary cloud backup I installed last week when I noticed Lily was acting terrified around you!

Evelyn: Richard, please delete that footage! We can fix this! We can go to marriage counseling!

Richard: The footage isn't on my phone, Evelyn. It was automatically uploaded to the central police department server five minutes ago when the motion sensors flagged high-impact distress!

The sound of heavy, rapid footsteps echoed from the front entryway as the double mahogany doors swung open once more.
