The bright morning light poured into the grand marble hallway of our mansion, casting long shadows against the polished white floor. USA flags hung silently in the background, a symbol of the wealth and influence my family held. But none of that luxury mattered when I stepped through the front door and heard the terrified screams of my three-year-old daughter, Lily.
Lily: Please, no! Stop! It hurts!
David: Lily?! Where are you?!
I dropped my leather briefcase onto the floor, my heart slamming against my ribs. As I rounded the corner into the main hallway, my blood ran cold. My sweet little toddler was crawling desperately on the cold stone floor toward the entrance. Her blonde hair was matted with sweat, and her face and arms were covered in red scrapes and bruises.
Lily: Daddy! Daddy, help me!
David: Oh God, Lily! What happened to you?!
Standing just behind her, holding a thick metallic chain leash attached to a leather collar around my daughter's neck, was my new wife, Victoria. She wore a sleeveless black dress and walked with a slow, graceful step, her face completely cold and unbothered as the chain rattled against the polished marble.
Victoria: She needs to learn her place in this home, David. She was being disobedient.
David: Are you out of your mind?! She's a baby!
Victoria: She is a spoiled child who needs discipline. You give her too much freedom.
David: Hey! Get away from my daughter!
I sprinted down the long hallway, my leather shoes skidding against the stone as I charged toward them. I dropped to my knees frantically, scooping Lily's small, trembling body into my arms and pulling her tight against my chest. The chain snapped taut before slipping off her collar. What was Victoria doing to my daughter behind closed doors, and how far had this torture already gone?
