The Fall Of Eleanor

Marcus: Get out of my house, Mother.

Eleanor: Marcus! You can't turn your back on your own mother for these peasants!

Marcus: You lied to me about my wife's death, you kept me away from my son, and you tried to blackmail Sarah while she was in a hospital bed!

Eleanor: I did it for the family! I did it to keep Sterling Global from falling apart!

Marcus: You did it for yourself! And now you're going to answer to the board of directors.

The heavy front doors chimed as Detective Miller stepped into the foyer, accompanied by two uniformed police officers.

Detective Miller: Eleanor Sterling?

Eleanor: What is the meaning of this?! Who called the police to my estate?!

Detective Miller: We have a federal warrant for your arrest regarding corporate extortion, wire fraud, and illegal interference with estate probate records.

Eleanor: Extortion?! This is a domestic family dispute! My lawyers will have this thrown out in ten minutes!

Lawyer A: We cannot represent you on federal extortion charges, Mrs. Sterling. Our firm is withdrawing as corporate counsel effective immediately.

The two officers stepped forward, pulling Eleanor's arms behind her grey designer suit. The metallic click of steel handcuffs echoed sharply through the marble hall.

Eleanor: Marcus! Do something! Tell them to stop!

Marcus turned his back on her, walking back into the sunlit hallway toward the nursery.

Eleanor: Clara! You miserable little nurse! You ruined my life!

Clara: You ruined your own life, Eleanor. You forgot that a mother's love is stronger than any corporate contract.

The officers led Eleanor out through the grand entrance doors, where reporters tipped off by the prosecutor's office swarmed the driveway, camera flashes exploding continuously as she was loaded into the back of a police cruiser.

Inside the quiet nursery, Marcus sat down on the leather sofa, his face buried in his hands as he let out a long, shuddering breath.

Clara walked in, setting the sleeping baby gently into his wooden crib under the American flag.

Clara: He's going to sleep for a few hours now, Marcus.

Marcus: Clara... I don't even know how to begin to ask for your forgiveness for what I did this morning.

Clara: You were blind, Marcus. But today you chose to open your eyes.

Marcus: I hit you... I put my hands on Sarah's sister in front of my own son.

Clara: You let anger rule your life because you thought everyone was trying to take something from you. But Leo doesn't need a corporate CEO. He needs a father.
