Daniel immediately ordered the head of security to retrieve the footage from the hallway camera. Within minutes, the recording was playing on a large screen in the mansion's study while the closest family members watched anxiously.
The video showed Sophia walking through the hallway alone, carrying a folder of legal documents. A few seconds later, Victoria appeared behind her. She called Sophia's name, and the two women began arguing near the staircase.
At first, the argument seemed heated but harmless. Then the footage revealed the crucial detail: Victoria grabbed Sophia's arm as she tried to walk away. Sophia pulled free, lost her balance on the polished marble, and fell backwards, striking her head against the edge of a step.
Victoria had not deliberately pushed her down the stairs. But she had lied about what happened.
Daniel closed his eyes in frustration. The truth was more complicated than anyone expected. Victoria's fear of being blamed had caused her to panic and invent a false story, making herself appear guilty of a far worse crime.
At the hospital, Sophia regained consciousness later that night. She confirmed that Victoria had confronted her about the documents she was carrying. Those documents contained evidence that Victoria had been secretly withdrawing money from a family charitable foundation to cover gambling debts.
Victoria broke down completely when confronted with both the footage and the financial records. Through tears, she admitted everything.
"I didn't mean for her to fall," she sobbed. "I was terrified she would tell Daniel about the money."
The Hawthorne family insisted that she enter treatment for her gambling addiction and repay every penny taken from the foundation. Criminal charges were avoided only because Sophia chose not to pursue them, believing the fall had been an accident caused by panic rather than an intentional attack.
Weeks later, after Sophia had recovered, Daniel had the security camera left exactly where it was. Beneath it, he placed a small silver plaque engraved with words that became a permanent reminder to everyone who entered the mansion:
