The Hawthorne mansion was hosting an extravagant anniversary celebration. Crystal chandeliers illuminated the ornate hallway, and the black-and-white checkered floor reflected the warm golden light from the ballroom beyond. Guests laughed and drank champagne while musicians played softly in the background.
Suddenly, a scream shattered the evening.
People rushed into the hallway and froze in horror.
Sophia Bennett lay motionless on the marble floor, her head resting near the base of the staircase. Kneeling beside her was Victoria Hawthorne, dressed in a striking red gown. Her hands trembled as she looked up at the crowd.
"Honey, she fell on her own!" Victoria cried, panic filling her voice. "I tried to help her!"
At the far end of the hallway stood Daniel Hawthorne. For a brief moment he stared at the scene in disbelief, trying to understand what had happened. Then his expression hardened.
"Enough!"
His voice echoed through the mansion. The sharp sound of a slap followed as he pushed Victoria away from Sophia. Guests gasped and stepped backwards in shock.
Daniel dropped to his knees beside Sophia and gently lifted her head into his arms.
"I'm here," he whispered desperately. "Stay with me."
Sophia's breathing was shallow, and a small cut near her temple stained the marble with blood. Victoria stood a few feet away, stunned and crying, insisting that she was innocent.
As servants called for an ambulance, an uneasy silence spread through the hallway. Something about Victoria's story didn't feel right.
Then an elderly guest looked upward and pointed towards the ceiling.
Hidden among the ornate mouldings was a modern security camera, its small indicator light glowing steadily.
The entire hallway fell silent.
Whatever had happened between the two women had almost certainly been captured on video.
