Miller looked at Maya with wide eyes filled with pure horror and confusion.
The simple uniform she wore had hidden her official high-ranking military status.
She had arrived at the base early on a covert evaluation mission.
Her goal was to inspect the daily conduct and discipline of local officers.
Miller had treated her like a helpless recruit from the very first minute.
Sergeant Miller: Commander, I had no knowledge of your actual identity.
Maya: Respect should be given to everyone regardless of rank, Miller.
General Vance: Your misconduct has been documented over three full months.
The General pulled a thick paper file from inside his dark uniform coat.
He tossed the folder onto the steel table right beside Miller's hand.
The pages opened to reveal dozens of filed reports about abuse of power.
Miller had routinely forced younger soldiers to clean up his personal messes.
He had used intimidation tactics to keep his subordinates quiet for years.
Maya: You failed the most basic test of military leadership today.
Sergeant Miller: Please give me one more opportunity to prove myself.
Maya: Dismissed, soldier, leave this hall at once.
Miller lowered his head in deep shame as two military police officers entered.
They placed their heavy hands on his shoulders and escorted him outside.
The remaining soldiers in the room watched in absolute satisfaction and relief.
Maya turned around to address the crowd of young men and women.
Maya: The culture of intimidation in this unit ends right now.
A low wave of soft murmurs ran through the assembled group of recruits.
For the first time in months, hope returned to the tired soldiers.
General Vance nodded his approval as he stood beside the young commander.
General Vance: You have a very long road ahead of you, Maya.
Maya: I am completely ready to fix this base, General.
She picked up the cotton rag she had used on the floor earlier.
She tossed it into the trash bin near the kitchen doors with confidence.
Her new mission on this military base had officially begun today.
