The sound of sirens grew louder in the distance.
David wiped the cold sweat from Chloe's pale forehead.
The guests gathered around in a tight circle now.
Whispers spread through the heavy room like wild fire.
Guest 1: How could a thick rope snap like that?
Guest 2: That rope was brand new this morning, I saw it!
David looked up at the frayed end hanging down.
The edge of the rope was clean and sharp.
It did not look like it snapped from weight.
It looked like it had been cut halfway through.
David turned his angry gaze toward the gathered family.
David: Someone intentionally cut this heavy swing rope today!
Father: What are you saying, David, that is impossible!
David: Look at the edges, sir, that was no accident!
Chloe pulled David's sleeve with her remaining strength.
Chloe: Look at Eleanor's hand, David, look right now.
David stood up quickly and faced the older woman.
Eleanor took a step backward toward the exit doors.
Eleanor: Do not look at me with such wild accusations!
David: Show us what is inside your purse, Eleanor!
Eleanor: This is an insult on my husband's big day!
Her son Julian stepped between David and his mother.
Julian looked nervous as he held up his hands.
Julian: Back off, David, my mother did nothing wrong!
David: Out of my way, Julian, before I push past!
The crowd gasped as David stepped right up to Eleanor.
He grabbed the strap of her dark leather purse.
Eleanor pulled back hard, but her fingers slipped completely.
The heavy leather bag fell hard onto the marble floor.
The contents spilled out right in front of everyone.
A pair of sharp heavy wire cutters rolled away.
Bits of white rope fiber were stuck to the metal blades.
