The next morning, sunlight poured through the high arch windows of the Sterling mansion hall. The piano stood silent, but the heavy, oppressive tension that had hovered over the house for months was completely gone. In the driveway, three black SUVs belonging to the district attorney's office were parked in a line.
District Attorney: Mr. Sterling, we've reviewed the security footage from last night. The evidence of child endangerment and physical assault is overwhelming.
Ethan: Is the arrest warrant signed?
District Attorney: Yes, sir. Officers are arresting Margarethe at her downtown hotel right now.
Maya: Will she be able to post bail?
District Attorney: Not with the judge we assigned to this case. Given her attempt to flee the scene and the severity of the charges regarding a minor, she'll remain in custody until trial.
Ethan: Thank you, prosecutor. Make sure the full extent of the law is applied.
District Attorney: You have my word, Mr. Sterling.
As the district attorney walked out, Lily came running down the grand staircase, her lace dress replaced with a comfortable pink sweater, her wrist neatly wrapped in a light bandage. Maya caught her in a warm hug at the bottom of the stairs.
Lily: Look, Nanny Maya! The sun is out today!
Maya: It sure is, sweetie! No more dark clouds in this house.
Ethan: How are you feeling, Lily?
Lily: My arm doesn't hurt anymore, Daddy! Can we go to the park with Maya?
Ethan: We can go anywhere you want today, princess. The entire day is yours.
Maya: I'll go pack some snacks and juice boxes for the trip.
Ethan: Maya, wait a second.
Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out a small silver key attached to a velvet ribbon, handing it to Maya.
Maya: What is this key for, Mr. Sterling?
Ethan: That is the key to the guest house on the east wing of the estate. It's yours now. Completely renovated, private, and fully furnished.
Maya: Mr. Sterling... I don't know what to say.
Ethan: You don't have to say anything. You protected my family when I wasn't there to do it myself. You are part of this family now.
Lily: Yay! Nanny Maya gets to live in the pretty house near the garden!
Maya: Thank you, Mr. Sterling. Thank you so much.
Ethan: Call me Ethan, Maya. We're a team now.
Maya: Alright... Ethan.
Lily grabbed Maya's hand with her good arm, pulling her toward the front glass doors with a bright smile on her face.
Lily: Come on, Maya! Let's go play in the sunshine!
Maya looked back at Ethan, who gave her a grateful nod. The evil stepmother was facing prison, the estate was secure, and for the first time since her mother's passing, little Lily was finally safe, loved, and free.
