Judge Harrison: The doctors said it's a complete miracle, Julian. The thick padding of her purple dress and her instinct to cover her abdomen absorbed the worst of the impact.
Julian: The baby... is the baby okay?
Judge Harrison: The baby's heartbeat is strong and steady. Maya sustained a fractured wrist and some heavy bruising, but both she and your unborn son are going to recover fully.
Julian dropped his head into his hands, letting out a long, shaky breath as tears of relief washed over his cheeks. He collapsed into a plastic waiting room chair, his body trembling from the release of tension.
Julian: Thank God... thank God...
Judge Harrison: She's awake in room four-twelve, Julian. She's been asking for you ever since she regained consciousness.
Julian: Can I see her now?
Judge Harrison: Go on in. She needs you right now.
Julian stood up quickly, hurrying down the quiet hallway to room four-twelve. He pushed the door open gently. Maya was lying on the hospital bed, her left arm wrapped in a white cast, an IV line connected to her hand. Her face was pale, but when she saw Julian, a soft smile broke across her lips.
Maya: Julian...
Julian: Oh, baby...
Julian walked straight to the side of the bed, leaning down to press a soft kiss against her forehead. He took her small hand gently in his, bowing his head against the mattress.
Julian: I'm so sorry, Maya. I should never have left your side at that party. I should have protected you.
Maya: It wasn't your fault, Julian. She planned it all along. How is... how is our baby?
Julian: The doctor checked everything. Our little boy is strong, just like his mother. He's completely safe.
Tears of joy trickled down Maya's cheeks as she rested her hand over her stomach, feeling a tiny, soft kick from within.
Maya: He's kicking... Julian, feel it.
Julian placed his hand over hers, feeling the faint, rhythmic movement beneath the hospital blanket. A tear fell from his eye onto her hand.
Julian: He's a fighter, Maya. Just like you.
Maya: What happened at the mansion after the ambulance left?
Julian: Evelyn and Richard were arrested in front of everyone. I found Father's toxicology report and his audio tape in the safe.
Maya: Arthur left a tape?
Julian: Yes. He knew Evelyn was trying to hurt him. He named you and our child as the sole beneficiaries of the Sterling trust fund and the company.
Maya: I don't care about the money, Julian. I just wanted us to be a real family without fear.
Julian: Nobody will ever threaten our family again, Maya. Evelyn is facing life in prison without parole, and Richard is going down as an accomplice. It's finally over.
