The Fall On The Marble

Julian: Somebody call nine-one-one right now!

Guest C: The ambulance is on its way, young man! Hold her steady!

Julian: Maya, look at me. Keep your eyes on my face. Don't close them, please!

Maya: Julian... the baby... I can't feel the baby moving...

Julian: Shh, don't say that. Our baby is going to be fine. I've got you.

Julian looked up at the top of the stairs, his chest heaving as tears of anger welled in his eyes. Evelyn took a small sip from a wine glass that Richard handed her, completely untroubled by the chaos below.

Julian: You pushed her, Evelyn! I saw you standing over her!

Evelyn: Don't be dramatic, Julian. The girl tripped on her own heavy dress. She was always clumsy.

Richard: That's right, brother. She probably had too much wine and lost her footing on the stairs.

Maya: He's lying... she put her hands on my stomach... she pushed me...

Julian: Shut up, Richard! Maya doesn't drink! She hasn't touched a drop of alcohol in seven months!

Evelyn: Well, accidents happen in big houses. Security, help this young woman out to the driveway so my guests aren't disturbed.

Julian: Touch her and I will break your hands! Nobody moves her until the paramedics arrive!

The older gentleman with the mustache stepped out from the crowd, his face dark with fury as he pointed a trembling finger at Evelyn.

Judge Harrison: I saw it, Evelyn! I was standing near the fountain when you placed your hands on her chest and pushed her!

Evelyn: Judge Harrison, please. You must be misremembering. The lighting up here is very dim.

Judge Harrison: My eyes are perfectly fine, Evelyn! You shoved a pregnant girl down thirty marble steps in front of a hundred witnesses!

Richard: Watch your tone, Judge! My mother is the primary executor of the Sterling estate!

Julian: She won't be executor for much longer, Richard!

The sound of loud sirens wailed outside the mansion's stained-glass windows, their red and blue lights flashing against the white marble pillars of the foyer. Two paramedics rushed through the front doors carrying a medical bag and a stretcher.

Paramedic: Clear the way! Let us through!

Julian: Over here! Please, help her! She was thrown down the stairs!

Paramedic: Stay calm, sir. Ma'am, can you hear my voice?

Maya: My stomach... please save my baby...

Paramedic: We're going to take care of you right now. Get the neck collar and the backboard!

Julian held Maya's hand tightly as the paramedics carefully lifted her onto the stretcher. Blood stained the hem of her purple dress, painting a dark streak across the white marble floor. Julian stood up, turning to face his stepmother with cold, unforgiving eyes.

Julian: Go with her to the hospital, Judge Harrison. Make sure she's safe.

Judge Harrison: Where are you going, Julian?

Julian: I'm going to make sure the woman who tried to murder my child never sees the light of day again.
