Heavy footsteps echoed from the west wing staircase. Two paramedics walked up the steps, guiding a pale, thin woman wrapped in a warm wool blanket. Her dark hair was streaks of grey, but her eyes were bright as she looked around the sunlit hallway.
Sarah: Maya... Maya, baby!
Maya: Mommy!
Maya broke away from Elena's arms, sprinting as fast as her small legs could carry her across the light marble floor. Sarah dropped to her knees, opening her arms wide as her daughter slammed into her chest, both of them weeping tears of pure, overwhelming joy.
Sarah: My sweet girl... oh God, I missed you so much!
Maya: Aunt Elena broke the wall with the big hammer, Mommy! She got me out!
Sarah looked up from her daughter's hair, her eyes meeting Elena's across the dusty floor. Elena ran across the corridor, dropping to her knees beside them and wrapping her arms around both her sister and her niece.
Elena: Sarah... I thought I lost you forever!
Sarah: I never stopped praying you'd find us, Elena. I knew you'd come for us.
Carter: Sarah, tell them! Tell them I kept you safe! I gave you food! I took care of Maya!
Sarah stood up slowly, keeping Maya behind her back as she faced the man who had kept her imprisoned in darkness for five years. Her voice was strong, clear, and filled with cold, untouchable authority.
Sarah: You didn't keep us safe, Carter. You kept us hostage because you knew the moment I walked into a courtroom, your stolen empire would crumble to dust.
Carter: I offer you a settlement! Ten million dollars! Twenty million! Just tell the police it was a domestic misunderstanding!
Sarah: The only thing I'm telling the prosecutor, Carter, is where you hid the rest of the forged trust documents.
Detective Vance stepped forward, placing his hand firmly on Carter's shoulder to guide him toward the exit.
Detective Vance: Save your settlement offers for the magistrate judge, Mr. Sterling. You're facing federal kidnapping, human trafficking, grand wire fraud, and illegal confinement.
The party guests cleared a wide path as the officers led the disgraced billionaire down the marble corridor. Camera flashes exploded continuously near the grand entrance doors as local news reporters, tipped off by the police dispatch, swarmed the estate driveway.
Reporter A: Mr. Sterling! Did you lock your accountant in a basement for five years?!
Reporter B: What happened to the fifty-million-dollar trust fund?!
Carter pulled his handcuffed hands up to try and cover his face from the flashing lenses, but the photographers captured every second of his ruined, terrified expression.
Detective Vance: Mind your head getting into the squad car, Mr. Sterling.
The heavy police car door slammed shut with a sharp metallic thud, cutting off his angry shouting instantly as the cruiser sped away down the long estate driveway.
