The air inside the grand hallway of the Sterling estate was heavy with tension, smelling of expensive floral perfume and polished mahogany. Outside, full natural daylight streamed through the soaring arched windows, casting long rays across the light marble floors. On the far wall, framed in gold leaf, a massive American flag hung beside a row of priceless oil paintings. Dozens of wealthy guests in tuxedos and evening gowns milled about, sipping champagne from crystal flutes.
Elena stood near the center of the corridor, her beige satin dress sweeping against the marble tile. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She wasn't an invited guest—she was the newly hired estate manager, brought in to organize the upcoming charity auction. But for the past twenty minutes, while everyone else laughed and talked, she had heard it. A faint, muffled whimpering coming from behind the wall.
Elena: Excuse me, does anyone else hear that?
Guest A: Hear what, dear? The string quartet in the ballroom?
Elena: No... behind this painting. It sounds like a child.
Guest B: Don't be ridiculous. This mansion was built fifty years ago. There's nothing behind those walls except steel beams and insulation.
Elena pressed her ear against the large framed oil portrait of the Sterling family patriarch. The canvas was cold, but beneath it, the hollow drywall vibrated. A tiny, raspy voice gasped for air.
Voice inside wall: Please... it's so dark...
Elena didn't hesitate. She looked toward the nearby renovation display near the west wing entrance, where a heavy steel sledgehammer rested against a tool cart. She stepped over, grabbed the wooden handle with both hands, and marched straight back to the portrait. Guests gasped, stepping back in shock as she raised the heavy iron head over her shoulder.
Elena: Move out of the way! Right now!
She swung the sledgehammer with all her strength. The heavy impact smashed into the painted canvas, cracking the drywall beneath it with a deafening bang. Glass shattered, wood splintered, and a cloud of white plaster dust erupted into the bright hallway, setting off a chain of events that would shatter the Sterling empire forever.
