Justice For Margaret

Six months later, the morning sun poured through the high arched windows of the Cook County Circuit Courtroom. The gallery was packed with journalists, corporate executives, and curious city residents eager to hear the final sentencing of one of Chicago's highest-profile corporate fraud cases.

Eleanor Sterling sat at the defense table wearing an orange correctional jumpsuit, her grey hair unstyled and her face pale and sunken. Beside her, three defense attorneys sat with their heads lowered as the judge reviewed the thick stack of financial audits on his bench.

Judge Vance: In the matter of the State versus Eleanor Sterling, on charges of grand embezzlement, wire fraud, and illegal witness coercion... how does the defense plead?

Lead Defense Attorney: Your Honor... my client wishes to change her plea to guilty on all counts in exchange for a removal of the federal RICO conspiracy charge.

A whisper of shock rippled through the crowded courtroom. Eleanor kept her eyes glued to the dark wood table, unable to look back at the gallery.

Judge Vance: Mrs. Sterling, the evidence presented by the State details a horrifying campaign of corporate greed that deprived a mother of her dignity and a young child of his rightful home for nearly a decade.

Eleanor: Your Honor, if I may speak—

Judge Vance: Silence! You used family trust funds as a weapon to destroy an innocent woman's life. The court finds no grounds for leniency in this case.

Judge Vance picked up his wooden gavel and slammed it down hard against the bench.

Judge Vance: You are hereby sentenced to fifteen years in state prison without the possibility of parole for eight years. Furthermore, all assets under your name are to be seized immediately to repay the Sterling Estate Trust.

Bailiffs grabbed Eleanor by her arms, escorting her through the side door toward the holding cells as the gallery erupted into quiet murmurs.

Julian sat in the front row of the courtroom wearing a navy suit, holding Toby’s hand on his right and Chloe’s on his left. Toby was wearing a neat tailored jacket and clean shoes, his face bright and healthy after six months of proper care and love.

Arthur: It's officially over, Julian. The court has restored 100% of the estate trust to you and Toby. He is legally recognized as your eldest son and co-owner of the Sterling Foundation.

Julian: Thank you, Arthur. For everything.

Toby: Does this mean we can go build the garden for Mom now?

Julian: Yes, Toby. That's our very next stop.

They walked out of the courthouse steps together, passing through the crowd of news reporters without answering a single question. Julian led his children straight to a waiting black SUV, driving away from the bustling city center toward the quiet green countryside an hour outside Chicago.
