Three months later, the morning sun rose bright and golden over the skyline of downtown Chicago. The glass skyscraper of Sterling Global gleamed brightly under the clear blue sky.
Inside the grand executive boardroom on the top floor, twenty senior board members sat surrounding a long mahogany table. At the head of the table sat Marcus Sterling, wearing a sharp charcoal suit. Sitting beside him in a plush armchair was Cora, wearing an elegant navy blue designer suit, holding five-year-old Lily on her lap as the little girl colored a picture book with bright crayons.
Chief legal officer, Mr. Harrison, walked into the boardroom carrying a thick leather binder containing the finalized state court decrees.
Mr. Harrison: Good morning, Marcus. Good morning, Cora. I have the final sentencing reports from the state supreme court.
Marcus: What was the judge's final ruling regarding Evelyn, Harrison?
Mr. Harrison: Evelyn Vance was sentenced yesterday afternoon to twenty-five years in state penitentiary without eligibility for early parole. Charges include felony child abuse, grand corporate wire fraud, and evidence tampering.
Cora: And her father's brokerage firm in Manhattan?
Mr. Harrison: Permanently shut down by the Federal Trade Commission, Cora. All thirty percent of their corporate voting stock has been legally transferred into young Lily's primary trust fund.
Board Member Miller stood up from his leather chair, raising his coffee glass toward the center of the table.
Board Member Miller: To our true CEO, Marcus Sterling, and the mother who stood strong to protect our company's true heir! Welcome to your boardroom, ladies!
The entire boardroom broke into loud, unanimous applause, standing up from their chairs to show their deep respect. Lily giggled happily, holding up her colored picture to show Marcus and Cora.
Lily: Look, Daddy! I drew a picture of our big house with the flag!
Marcus: It's the most beautiful picture in the world, sweetie. Just like you.
Marcus reached across the table, taking Cora's hand into his own and squeezing it tight with deep, quiet pride.
Marcus: We survived the storm, Cora. And now we get to build something beautiful for our family.
Cora: We built a real home, Marcus. A home built on truth, love, and protection.
