The heavy glass front doors pushed open, and the cold morning air rushed into the warm foyer. News camera crews who had been waiting outside for the annual gala swarmed the long driveway, flashbulbs exploding continuously against the daylight.
Reporter A: Miss Evelyn! Is it true you assaulted Marcus Sterling's five-year-old daughter?
Reporter B: Did you steal two million dollars from the family trust fund to pay off offshore gambling debts?
Evelyn: Get those cameras out of my face! Get away from me!
Evelyn pulled her handcuffed hands up, trying desperately to hide her tear-stained, ruined face from the flashing lenses, but the photographers captured every single second of her downfall.
Officer Davis pushed her head down gently, guiding her into the back seat of the lead police cruiser parked near the marble fountain. The heavy car door slammed shut with a sharp, metallic thud, cutting off her shrill shouting instantly.
Inside the warm foyer, Marcus stood up from the floor, holding Lily securely in his broad arms, wrapping his dark navy suit jacket around her white dress to keep her warm.
I walked beside my husband, my hand resting gently on his shoulder as little Lily rested her head against his neck, her breathing finally smoothing out.
Cora: Is her cheek okay, Marcus?
Marcus: It's a little red, sweetie, but the paramedic team is right outside to check her over and apply a cold compress.
Lily: Daddy... is the mean lady ever coming back?
Marcus: She is never coming back, baby girl. Nobody is ever going to hurt you or talk down to you in this house again. I promise you on my life.
Detective Vance walked back inside the foyer, holding a leather binder containing official state property transfer papers.
Detective Vance: Mr. Sterling, the federal task force just completed the seizure of all offshore accounts registered under Evelyn's maiden name in Nassau.
Marcus: Were the trust fund assets fully recovered, Vance?
Detective Vance: Every single cent, Marcus. All two million dollars have been transferred back into young Lily's primary educational trust fund, under the sole legal guardianship of your wife, Cora.
Cora gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as fresh tears of relief spilled down her cheeks.
Cora: Detective... thank you. Thank you for protecting our daughter's future.
Detective Vance: It was my duty, Mrs. Sterling. You and your husband showed incredible strength today.
