Restoring the Estate

By three o'clock that afternoon, the rain had stopped, giving way to a warm, bright sunshine across the Sterling property. Inside the grand dining room, Margaret sat at the head of the long mahogany table, wearing an elegant navy blue silk dress, her silver hair styled neatly.

Daniel sat to her right, reviewing a stack of corporate legal releases provided by Detective Vance's team.

Arthur poured fresh tea into crystal cups, setting one down gently in front of Margaret.

Margaret: Thank you, Arthur. How is the staff doing this afternoon?

Butler Arthur: Everyone is greatly relieved, Madam Sterling. The household has returned to its peaceful rhythm.

Daniel: Mom, Vance just confirmed that Chloe's father agreed to a full civil asset surrender to avoid additional federal conspiracy charges.

Margaret: Excellent. That means the two million dollars will be returned to the trust fund without a drawn-out court battle.

Daniel: What about the house staff? Chloe threatened to fire half of them.

Margaret: Every staff member is receiving a twenty percent bonus on their annual contract, effective today. They handled her arrogance with remarkable patience.

Butler Arthur: That is exceptionally generous, Madam Sterling. On behalf of the entire staff, thank you.

Margaret: You don't need to thank me, Arthur. You kept this estate running while my son was distracted by a gold-digger.

Daniel looked down at his tea cup, letting out a quiet, sheepish sigh.

Daniel: I guess I have a lot to learn about reading people, Mom.

Margaret: Reading people is easy, Daniel, once you stop listening to what they say and start watching how they treat those who can do nothing for them.

Daniel: When she splashed that water on you... I felt my blood boil. I didn't even know it was you yet, but I knew she was a monster.

Margaret: And that is why I didn't stop you when you slapped her. You reacted to cruelty, not to my identity. That tells me your father raised a good man.

Daniel smiled softly, looking over at his mother with deep respect.

Daniel: What are your plans for the rest of the month? Are you heading back to Palm Beach?

Margaret: Absolutely not. I am staying right here until I am certain the corporate merger with Vance Logistics is completely cleansed of that girl's family influence.

Daniel: I could certainly use your help in the boardroom, CEO Sterling.

Margaret: Then let's get to work, son. We have an empire to run.

The front doors of the mansion remained open to the fresh, cool breeze blowing in from the gardens. The white marble floor of the foyer gleamed under the bright daylight, spotless, clean, and completely free of the dark greed that had threatened to destroy it.
