The Undercover Matriarch

Chloe: What are you talking about? Why were you dressed like a maid in your own house?!

Margaret: Two weeks ago, my private security team received an anonymous tip regarding unauthorized wire transfers coming from my son's personal trust account.

Daniel: What? What wire transfers, Mom?

Margaret: Over two million dollars had been moved out of your estate liquidity fund and sent to a boutique real estate firm in Miami.

Chloe backed away toward the front doors, her gold satin gown dragging along the marble floor. Her hands began to shake violently.

Chloe: That... that was an investment! Daniel authorized that investment!

Daniel: I never authorized any wire transfer to Miami! I don't even own property in Florida!

Margaret: Daniel didn't authorize it, but someone used his digital signature stamp from his home office computer three days before he left for his Chicago conference.

Chloe: That's a lie! Someone hacked his computer!

Margaret: The IP address used for the transfer belonged to the Wi-Fi network in your private guest suite, Chloe.

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the grand foyer. Daniel turned his head slowly, staring at Chloe with absolute, terrifying fury.

Daniel: You stole two million dollars from my trust fund?

Chloe: Daniel, listen to me! My father's company was going under! I was going to pay it back the moment we got married!

Daniel: You forged my digital signature on a federal wire document?!

Chloe: We were getting married! What's yours was supposed to be mine anyway!

Margaret: Nothing in this house was ever going to be yours, child. I had the estate cameras modified three days ago. Every keypress you made on that laptop in the study was recorded in high definition.

Chloe: You... you spied on me?

Margaret: I protected my family's legacy. I put on this uniform and walked these halls as a maid so I could observe you without your fake, polished mask.

Daniel: And yesterday morning, when I was on the plane, what were you doing, Chloe?

Margaret: She was downstairs telling the butler staff that the moment the wedding was over, half of them would be fired and replaced with her personal agency workers from New York.

Butler Arthur: That is correct, Mr. Daniel. She told us we were outdated and overpaid.

Chloe: Arthur, shut your mouth! You're just a servant!

Daniel: Arthur has been with my family for thirty years! He is more of a family member to me than you ever were!

Chloe: Daniel, please! Look at me! I love you!

Daniel: You don't love me, Chloe. You loved the Sterling name, the penthouse in Manhattan, and the bank accounts you tried to bleed dry.

The heavy front doors of the mansion chimed as two uniformed police officers pushed their way through the entryway, accompanied by a tall man in a dark trench coat carrying a leather folder.

Detective Vance: Madam Sterling? We received your emergency dispatch signal.

Margaret: Good morning, Detective Vance. Thank you for arriving so promptly.

Chloe: Detective! Thank God you're here! This man just struck me across the face! Look at my cheek!

Detective Vance didn't even look at Chloe's cheek. He opened his leather folder and pulled out a signed document stamped with an official federal seal.

Detective Vance: Chloe Vance? I have a warrant for your arrest regarding grand forgery, corporate wire fraud, and illegal asset liquidation.

Chloe gasped, stumbling backward against the marble pillar as her face turned completely white.
